2001 Models



  1. Note the radio security code and disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Place a suitable drain pan under the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Drain the power steering fluid from the reservoir.
  6.  
  7. Remove the belt by loosening the pivot and lock bolts.
  8.  
  9. Cover the air conditioner compressor and drive belts with several shop towels to absorb any spilled fluid.
    WARNING
    If any power steering fluid is spilled on a painted surface, wipe it off immediately.

  11. Squeeze the power steering hose clamp at the pump, slide it up the hose and remove the hose from the pump.
  12.  
  13. Loosen the power steering pump outlet hose retaining bolts, and remove the hose fitting along with its O-ring from the pump.
    WARNING
    Protect all open power steering lines and fittings from debris and contaminants, otherwise internal damage may occur.

  15. Wrap a clean cloth around the outlet hose fitting, and the port on the pump and hold in place with duct electrical tape.
  16.  
  17. Plug and cap the reservoir hose and metal hose fitting on the pump.
    WARNING
    Do not turn the steering wheel with the pump removed.

  19. Remove the pivot and lock bolts, then remove the pump.

    Fig. When the bolts are removed, place shop towels to absorb any leakage, replace the O-ring on the fitting and coat with Genuine Honda Power Steering Fluid during reinstallation

To install:

  1. Install the pump and loosely install the lock and pivot bolts.
  2.  
  3. Install a new O-ring on the power steering hose outlet fitting, lubricate the O-ring with a light coating of Honda power steering fluid and install the fitting.
  4.  
  5. The balance of the installation is the reverse of the removal procedure. Please refer to the Engine Mechanical Section for belt adjustment procedures.
  6.  
  7. Make note of the following points:

    Make sure all fasteners, hose clamps and fittings are properly installed and tightened.
     
    When topping off the system use only Genuine Honda Power Steering Fluid-V or S. Substituting another brand may damage internal components.
     
    Clean any spilled fluid before starting the vehicle.
     
    Bleed the system and top off as necessary.

2002-06 Models



  1. Place a suitable container under the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Drain the power steering fluid from the reservoir.
  4.  
  5. Remove the drive belt (A) from the pump pulley, as outlined in the Engine Mechanical Section.
  6.  
  7. Remove the pump mounting bolts (B).
  8.  
  9. Cover the auto-tensioner, alternator, and A/C compressor with several shop towels to protect them from spilled power steering fluid. Disconnect the pump inlet hose (C) and pump outlet hose (D) from the pump (E), and plug them. Take care not to spill the fluid on the body or parts. Wipe off any spilled fluid at once. Do not turn the steering wheel with the pump removed.

  11. Cover the opening of the pump with a piece of tape to prevent foreign material from entering the pump.

To install:

  1. Install the pump in the pump bracket with the mounting bolts. Tighten the outlet hose bolts to 8 ft. lbs. (11 Nm) and the power steering pump mounting bolts to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm).

  3. Connect the pump inlet hose and pump outlet hose.
  4.  
  5. Install the drive belt (A).
  6.  
  7. Note these items during drive belt installation:

    Make sure that the drive belt is properly positioned on the pulleys.
     
    Do not get power steering fluid or grease on the auto-tensioner, alternator, A/C compressor, and drive belt, or pulley faces. Clean off any fluid or grease before installation.

  9. Fill the reservoir to the upper level line.
