Wheel Bearings

Adjustment



The wheel bearings are sealed units and are not adjustable.

Removal & Installation



2001 Models
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Rear wheel
     
    Brake drum
     
    Spindle nut
     
    Brake shoes and parking brake cable
     
    Brake fluid line
     
    Wheel sensor, if equipped
     
    Wheel bearing flange bolts
     
    Hub, backing plate and bearing assembly
     

  4.  
  5. Press the hub out of the wheel bearing.
  6.  
  7. If necessary, press the inner bearing race off of the hub.
  8.  
  9. Remove the backing plate from the bearing assembly.

To install:


NOTE
Use a new spindle nut for assembly.

  1. Use a new O-ring and install the backing plate to the bearing assembly. Tighten the bolts to 47 ft. lbs. (64 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Press the hub into the bearing assembly.
  4.  
  5. Install or connect the following:

    Hub, backing plate and bearing assembly. Tighten the flange bolts to 76 ft. lbs. (103 Nm).
     
    Brake fluid line
     
    Parking brake cable and brake shoes
     
    Wheel sensor, if equipped
     
    Spindle nut. Tighten the nut to 134 ft. lbs. (181 Nm).
     
    Brake drum
     
    Rear wheel
     

  6.  
  7. Bleed the brake system.
  8.  

2002-06 Models
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Rear wheel
     
    Brake caliper
     
    Rotor
     
    Spindle nut
     
    Axle shaft (2wd)
     
    Parking brake shoes
     
    Parking brake cable
     
    Wheel sensor, if equipped
     

  4.  
  5. Support the trailing arm.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Upper arm from the knuckle
     

  8.  
  9. Matchmark the trailing arm cam adjusting bolt and cam. Remove the bolt. Discard the nut.
  10.  
  11. Remove the flange bolt.
  12.  
  13. Remove the knuckle assembly.
  14.  
  15. Press the hub from the knuckle. The bearings and races can now be pressed out and replaced.
    NOTE
    With ABS, install the bearing with the magnetic encoder (brown color) toward the inside of the knuckle.

  16.  
  17. Observe the following torques:

    Flange bolt: 69 ft. lbs. (93 Nm)
     
    Cam bolts: 43 ft. lbs. (59 Nm)
     
    Spindle nut: 134 ft. lbs. (181 Nm)
     
    Caliper mounting bolts: 41 ft. lbs. (55 Nm)
