Transaxle Removal & Installation

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section. Also see the IMA system disabling before proceeding with any procedure.
  2.  
  3. Drain the transaxle.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative and then positive battery cables
     
    Battery tray
     
    Air intake assembly
     
    Engine splash shield
     
    Speed sensor connector
     
    Back-up light switch connector
     
    Neutral safety switch connector
     
    Breather tube
     
    Air cleaner bracket
     
    Clutch line bracket
     
    Shift cables and bracket
     
    Throttle drum cover
     
    Clutch slave cylinder and hose bracket
     
    Starter motor
     

  6.  
  7. Install a suitable engine lifting device and lift and support the engine.
  8.  
  9. Raise the transaxle enough to take the weight off the mounts.
  10.  
  11. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Transaxle mount bracket
     
    Upper 2 transaxle mounting bolts
     
    Splash shield bracket
     
    Front wheels
     
    Axle shafts

  13. Install a transmission jack.
  14.  
  15. Remove the rear engine mount bracket.
  16.  
  17. Remove the 4 lower transmission mounting bolts
  18.  
  19. Pull the transaxle back until it clears the dowel pins and remove the transaxle.
  20.  

To install:


NOTE
Use new circlips, split pins and self-locking nuts for assembly.

  1. Install or connect the following:
    NOTE
    Apply super high temperature urea grease to the end of the slave cylinder.



    Transaxle
     
    Lower transaxle housing mounting bolts. Tighten the bolts to 47 ft. lbs. (65 Nm).
     
    Rear engine mount bracket. Tighten the bolts to 36 ft. lbs. (49 Nm). Tighten the through bolt to 66 ft. lbs. (89 Nm).
     
    Upper transaxle housing mounting bolts. Tighten the bolts to 47 ft. lbs. (65 Nm).
     
    Transaxle mount bracket. Tighten the fasteners to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm).
     
    Remove the engine hangar
     
    Starter
     



    Slave cylinder. Tighten the bolts to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm).
     
    Throttle drum cover
     
    Shift cables and bracket
     
    Clutch line bracket
     
    Air cleaner bracket
     
    Breather tube
     
    Neutral safety switch connector
     
    Back-up light switch connector
     
    Speed sensor connector
     
    Engine splash shield
     
    Air intake assembly
     
    Battery tray
     
    Negative and then positive battery cables
     

  2.  
  3. Test drive the vehicle and check for smooth shifting and clutch operation.
