Inspection

J35A1 & J35A4 Engines

  1. Connect the Honda Diagnostic System (HDS), or equivalent scan tool, to the data link connector (DLC), and check for DTC's.
  2.
  3. If a DTC is present, diagnose and repair the cause before inspecting the ignition timing.
  4.
  5. Start the engine. Hold the engine at 3,000 rpm with no load shift lever in Park or Neutral, until the radiator fan comes on, then let it idle.
  6.
  7. Check the idle speed, and adjust it if necessary, as outlined in the Fuel System Section.
  8.
  9. Follow the tester's prompts to get the tester in the ''SCS'' mode (see the tester operator's manual).
  10.
  11. Connect the timing light to the No. 1 ignition coil wire.
  12.
  13. Aim the light toward the pointer (A) on the timing belt cover. Check the ignition timing under a no load conditions: headlights, blower fan, rear window defogger, and air conditioner are not operating.

  14.
  15. The ignition timing should be 8-12 °BTDC (red mark B) during idle in Park or Neutral.
  16.
  17. If the ignition timing differs from the specification, check the cam timing, and the top dead center (TDC) and crankshaft position (CKP) sensors. If necessary, substitute a known-good powertrain control module (PCM) and recheck.
  18.
  19. Turn the ignition switch OFF. Disconnect the HDS and the timing light.
  20.

J35A6 & J35A7 Engines

  1. Connect the Honda Diagnostic System (HDS), or equivalent scan tool, to the data link connector (DLC), and check for DTCs. If a DTC is present, diagnose and repair the cause before inspecting the ignition timing.
  2.
  3. Start the engine. Hold the engine speed at 3,000 rpm with no load (in park or neutral) until the radiator fan comes on, then let it idle.
  4.
  5. Check the idle speed, as outlined in the Fuel System Section.
  6.
  7. Select the SCS mode with the HDS.
  8.
  9. Connect the timing light to the No. 1 ignition coil harness.
  10.
  11. Aim the light toward the pointer (A) on the timing belt cover. Check the ignition timing under a no load condition (headlights, blower fan, rear window defogger, and air conditioner are turned off).

  12.
  13. The ignition timing should be 8-12° BTDC (red mark B) at idle in Park or Neutral.
  14.
  15. If the ignition timing differs from the specification, check the cam timing. If the cam timing is OK, update the powertrain control module (PCM) if it does not have the latest software, or substitute a known-good PCM, then recheck. If the system works properly, and the PCM was substituted, replace the original PCM.
  16.
  17. Disconnect the HDS and the timing light.
