Adjustment



Major Adjustment

To be done when replacing brake shoes.

  1. Raise the rear of the vehicle, and support it with safety stands in the proper locations.
  2.  
  3. Remove the rear wheels.
  4.  
  5. Release the parking brake, and back off the adjusting nut (A).
  6.  
  7. Remove the access plug (A).
  8.  
  9. Turn the adjuster (B) with a flat-tip screwdriver (C) until the shoes lock against the drum. Then back off ten clicks, and install the access plug.

  11. Do the minor adjustment procedure.
  12.  
  13. Install the rear wheels.
  14.  

Minor Adjustment
  1. Raise the rear of the vehicle, and support it with safety stands in the proper locations.
  2.  
  3. Tighten the adjusting nut (A) until the parking brake drags slightly when the rear wheels are turned.

  5. Back off the adjusting nut in half-turn increments, and check for proper adjustment at a pedal force of 294 N (66 lbs.).

Break-In Procedure




NOTE
Do the brake linings surface break-in when replacing shoes and/or the rear brake disc/drum.


CAUTION
Do this operation in a safe area

  1. Park the vehicle on a firm, level surface.
  2.  
  3. Do the major parking brake adjustment.
  4.  
  5. Do the minor parking brake adjustment.
  6.  
  7. Pull the parking brake release lever, while driving the vehicle.
  8.  
  9. Press the parking brake pedal five clicks.
  10.  
  11. Drive the vehicle for 1 / 4 mile (400m) at no more than 31 mph (50 km/h).
  12.  
  13. Stop the vehicle and release the parking brake for 5-10 minutes or drive the vehicle for 5-10 minutes to allow the brake disc/drum to cool.
  14.  
  15. Repeat step 4 through 6 three more times.
  16.  
  17. Check the parking brake pedal adjustment.
  18.  

Removal & Installation



2001-04 Models
  1. Raise the rear of the vehicle, and support it with safety stands in the proper locations. Remove the rear wheels.
  2.  
  3. Release the parking brake, and remove the rear brake caliper and brake disc/drum.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect and remove the upper return springs (A).

  7. Remove the tension pins (A) by pushing and turning the retainers (B).

  9. Remove the connecting rod (A).

  11. Lower the parking brake shoe assembly.
  12.  
  13. Remove the forward brake shoe by removing the lower return spring (A) and adjuster assembly (B).

  15. Remove the rearward brake shoe by disconnecting the parking brake cable (A) from the parking brake lever (B).

  17. Remove the U-clip, wave washer, and parking brake lever from the brake shoe.

To Assemble

  1. Apply Molykote 44 MA grease to the sliding surface of the pivot pin (A) of the rearward brake shoe (B).

  3. Install the parking brake lever (C) and wave washer (D) on the pivot pin, and secure with a new U-clip (E).
    1. Install the wave washer with its convex side facing out.
    2.  
    3. Pinch the U-clip securely to prevent the parking brake lever from coming out from the brake shoe.
    4.

  5. Connect the parking brake cable to the parking brake lever.
  6.  
  7. Apply Molykote 44 MA grease to the shoe ends and connecting rod ends, sliding surfaces, and opposite edges of the parking brake shoe as shown. Wipe off any excess grease Keep grease off the brake linings.
  8.  
  9. Install the tension pin (A), retainer spring (B), and retainer (C) of the rearward brake shoe (D). Make sure the tension pin does not contact the parking brake lever.

  11. Clean the threaded portions of the clevis A, and coat the threads with multipurpose grease. Clean the sliding surface of the clevis B, and coat the sliding surface with multipurpose grease. Install the clevis A and B on the adjuster (C), and shorten the clevis A by turning the adjuster.

  13. Reinstall the brake shoe adjuster assembly (D), and hook the lower return spring (E) on the parking brake shoes.

Install the clevis A and B on the adjuster (C), and shorten the clevis A by turning the adjuster. Reinstall the brake shoe adjuster assembly (D), and hook the lower return spring (E) on the parking brake shoes-2001-04 models

  15. Install the rod spring to the connecting rod first. Then install the connecting rod on the parking brake shoes.
  16.  
  17. Install the tension pin, retainer spring, and retainer of the forward brake shoe.
  18.  
  19. Install the upper return springs.
  20.  
  21. Install the rear brake disc/drum and rear brake caliper.
  22.  
  23. Do the major parking adjustment brake.
  24.  

2005-06 Models
  1. Raise the rear of the vehicle, and support it with safety stands in the proper locations.
  2.  
  3. Remove the rear wheels.
  4.  
  5. Release the parking brake, and remove the rear brake caliper and brake disc.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect and remove the upper return springs (A).

  9. Remove the tension pins (A) by pushing and turning the retainer springs (B).

  11. Disconnect the rod spring (A), and remove the connecting rod (B).

  13. Lower the parking brake shoe assembly.

  15. Remove the forward brake shoe by removing the lower return spring (A) and adjuster assembly (B).

  17. Remove the rearward brake shoe by disconnecting the parking brake cable from the parking brake lever.
  18.  
  19. Remove the U-clip (A), wave washer (B), parking brake lever (C), and pivot pin (D) from the brake shoe.

To assemble:

  1. Apply Molykote 44 MA grease to the sliding surface of the pivot pin and insert the pin into the brake shoe from the rear side.
  2.  
  3. Install the parking brake lever and wave washer on the pivot pin, and secure with a new U-clip.
    1. Install the wave washer with its convex side facing out.
    2.  
    3. Pinch the U-clip securely to prevent the pivot pin from coming out of the brake shoe.
    4.

  5. Connect the parking brake cable (A) to the parking brake lever (B). Apply silicone grease to the cable contact surface (C) on the backing plate.

  7. Apply Molykote 44 MA grease to the sliding surfaces, the inner edges of the parking brake shoes, and the pivot of the parking brake lever as shown. Wipe off any excess. Keep grease off the brake linings.
  8.  
  9. Clean the threaded portions of clevis A, and coat the threads of clevis A with grease. Clean the sliding surface of clevis B, and coat the sliding surface of clevis B with grease. Thread clevis A all the way into the adjuster (C). Install clevis B.
  10.  
  11. Reinstall the brake shoe adjuster assembly (D), and hook the lower return spring (E) on the parking brake shoes.

Thread clevis A all the way into the adjuster (C). Install clevis B. Reinstall the brake shoe adjuster assembly (D), and hook the lower return spring (E) on the parking brake shoes-2005-06 models

  13. Install the rod spring (A) to the connecting rod (B) first with the spring end (C) pointing downward. Then install the connecting rod on the parking brake shoes.

  15. Install the tension pins (A), and retainer springs (B). Make sure the tension pin does not contact to the parking brake lever.

  17. Install the upper return springs.
  18.  
  19. Install the brake disc/drum and rear brake caliper.
  20.  
  21. Adjust the parking brake.
