Removal & Installation



2003-04 Models
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the engine oil and power steering system.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Power steering pump outlet hose from the pump and the hose clamp
     
    Steering joint cover, mark the steering joint-to-gearbox pinion shaft for reference
     
    Steering joint from the pinion shaft
     
    Splash shield
     
    Transfer assembly
     
    Tie rod ends from the knuckles
     
    Lower arm ball joints from the knuckles
     
    Power steering hose
     
    Power steering pressure switch connector
     
    Nuts attaching the transmission lower front and rear mount
     
    Bolt attaching the rear mount
     

  6.  
  7. Support the engine with a hoist.

    Nut attaching the front mount bracket
     

  8.  
  9. Make reference marks on the body across the marks on the edge of the front subframe.

    Front subframe
     
    Torque converter cover and the 2 bolts retaining the transmission
     
    Oil pan
     

  10.  

To install:

  1. Install the oil pan. Apply liquid gasket as shown.
  2.  
  3. Tighten the bolts in sequence to 105 inch lbs. (12 Nm) using several passes.
  4.  
  5. Install or connect the following:

    2 bolts retaining the transmission and tighten to 28 ft. lbs. (38 Nm)
     
    Torque converter cover and tighten the bolts to 9 ft. lbs. (12 Nm)

  7. Align the reference marks on the body across the marks on the edge of the front subframe.

    Front subframe. Use new bolts and tighten the 14mm bolts to 76 ft. lbs. (103 Nm). Tighten the front brace bolts to 54 ft. lbs. (74 Nm) and the rear brace bolts to 86 ft. lbs. (117 Nm).
     
    Nut attaching the front mount bracket to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm)
     
    Bolt attaching the rear mount to 28 ft. lbs. (38 Nm)
     
    Nuts attaching the transmission lower front and rear mount to 28 ft. lbs. (38 Nm)
     
    Power steering pressure switch connector
     
    Power steering hose
     
    Lower arm ball joints to the knuckles
     
    Tie rod ends to the knuckles
     
    Transfer assembly
     
    Splash shield
     
    Steering joint to the pinion shaft
     
    Steering joint cover
     
    Power steering pump outlet hose clamp and hose
     
    Negative battery cable

  8.  

2005 Models
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the engine oil.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Exhaust front pipe
     
    Torque converter cover
     
    Oil pan
     

  6.  

To install:

  1. Install the oil pan. Apply liquid gasket as shown.
  2.  
  3. Tighten the bolts in sequence to 105 inch lbs. (12 Nm) using several passes.
  4.  
  5. Wait at least 30 minutes before adding oil to the engine.
  6.  
  7. Install or connect the following:

    Torque converter cover, if removed
     
    Exhaust front pipe
     
    Negative battery cable
