To install:

  1. If installing a new belt, perform the following steps:
    1. Clean the pulleys, belt guide plate and the upper and lower covers.
    2.
    3. Set the timing belt drive pulley to TDC by aligning the TDC mark on the tooth of the belt drive pulley with the pointer on the oil pump.
    4.
    5. Set the camshaft pulleys to TDC by aligning the TDC marks on the camshaft pulleys with the pointers on the back covers.
    6.
    7. Remove the battery clamp bolt.
    8.
    9. Remove the belt tensioner.
    10.
    11. Align the holes on the rod and housing of the tensioner.
    12.
    13. Using a press or other suitable device, slowly compress the tensioner and insert a 0.08 inch (2mm) pin through the housing and rod.
    14.
    15. Install the tensioner making sure the pin is still installed.
    16.
    17. Apply thread locker to idler pulley bolt then hand tighten the bolt.
    18.
    19. Install the belt over the pulleys in this sequence; drive pulley, idler pulley, front camshaft pulley, water pump pulley, rear camshaft pulley and adjusting pulley.
    20.
    21. Tighten the idler pulley bolt to 33 ft. lbs. (44 Nm).
    22.
    23. Remove the pin from the tensioner.
    24.

  2.
  3. Install or connect the following:

Lower half of the side mount and tighten the 3 long bolts to 33 ft. lbs. (44 Nm) and the one short bolt to 9 ft. lbs. (12 Nm)

Timing belt guide plate as illustrated

Lower timing cover and tighten the bolts to 9 ft. lbs. (12 Nm)

Front and rear upper timing covers and tighten the bolts to 9 ft. lbs. (12 Nm)

Crankshaft pulley and tighten the bolts to 181 ft. lbs. (245 Nm), using the holding tool to prevent the unit from turning

  4.
  5. Rotate the crankshaft pulley about 5 or 6 degrees clockwise so the belt positions itself on the pulleys.
  6.
  7. Turn the crankshaft pulley so the white mark aligns with the pointer.
  8.
  9. Check the camshaft pulley marks are aligned. If the marks are aligned, proceed to the next step. If the marks are not aligned, remove the timing belt and reinstall using the steps outlined before this step.
  10.
  11. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Drive belt

Upper side mount and tighten the bolts in the sequence illustrated to the specifications in the illustration

  12.
  13. Using a suitable scan tool, perform the Powertain Control Module (PCM) reset and the Crankshaft position (CKP) pattern clear/learn procedures, following the scan tool manufactures instructions.

    8.

  16.
  17. If the tensioner was extended and the belt cannot be installed, perform the steps above for the new belt installation.
    1. Install the belt over the pulleys in this sequence; drive pulley, idler pulley, front camshaft pulley, water pump pulley, rear camshaft pulley and adjusting pulley.
    2.
    3. Tighten the idler pulley bolt to 33 ft. lbs. (44 Nm).
