Removal & Installation
Accord And Civic
- Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
Remove or disconnect the following:
Rear wheels and brake drumsUpper return spring from the brake shoes
Rear wheels and brake drums
Push the retainer springs and turn the tension pins to release the shoes from the backing plate.
Lower the brake shoe assembly and remove the lower return springBrake shoe assembly from the backing plateParking brake cable from the brake shoe leverUpper return spring, self-adjuster lever, and self-adjuster spring. Separate the brake shoes.Wave washer, parking brake lever, and pivot pin from the brake shoe by removing the U-clip.
Lower the brake shoe assembly and remove the lower return spring
Install or connect the following:
Brake cylinder grease to the sliding surface of the pivot pin and insert the pin into the brake shoe.Parking brake lever and wave washer on the pivot pin and pinch the U-clip with a pair of pliers to secure the pivot pin to the shoeParking brake cable to the parking brake leverAdjuster spring to the adjuster lever first, then to the brake shoeAdjuster bolt/clevis assembly and the upper return springBrake shoes to the backing plateLower return spring, the tension pins and retaining springsConnect the upper return spring
Brake cylinder grease to the sliding surface of the pivot pin and insert the pin into the brake shoe.
- Turn the adjuster bolt to force the brake shoes out until the brake drum will not easily go on. Back off the adjuster bolt just enough that the brake drum will go on and turn easily.
- Install the wheels.
- Depress the brake pedal several times to set the self-adjusting brake. Adjust the parking brake.
