Cylinder Head Cover

Removal & Installation



2.4L Engine
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Drain the engine oil.
  4.  
  5. Remove the engine cover.
  6.  
  7. Remove the four ignition coils, as outlined in the Engine Electrical Section.
  8.  
  9. Remove the two bolts securing the vacuum line.
  10.  
  11. Remove the bolt securing the power steering hose bracket.
  12.  
  13. Remove the dipstick and breather hose.
  14.  
  15. Remove the cylinder head cover.
  16.  

To install:

  1. Thoroughly clean the head cover gasket and the groove.
  2.  
  3. Install the head cover gasket in the groove of the cylinder head cover.
  4.  
  5. Check that the mating surfaces are clean and dry.
  6.  
  7. Apply liquid gasket, P/N 08717-0004, 08718-0001, 08718-0002, 08718-0003, or 08718-0009, on the chain case and the No. 5 rocker shaft holder mating areas.
    NOTE
    Do not install components if too much time has passed after applying the liquid gasket (for P/N 08718-0002, no more than 4 minutes, for all others, no more than 5 minutes). Instead, remove the old residue and reapply the liquid gasket.

  9. Set the spark plug seals on the spark plug tubes. Place the cylinder head cover on the cylinder head, then slide the cover slightly back and forth to seat the head cover gasket.
  10.  
  11. Inspect the cover washers. Replace any washer that is damaged or deteriorated.
  12.  
  13. Tighten the cylinder head cover bolts in two or three steps. In the final step tighten all bolts, in sequence, to 8.7 ft. lbs. (12 Nm).
    WARNING
    Wait at least 30 minutes before filling the engine with oil. Do not run the engine for at least 3 hours after installing the head cover.

  15. Install the dipstick and breather hose.
  16.  
  17. Tighten the bolt securing the power steering hose bracket.
  18.  
  19. Tighten the two bolts securing the vacuum line.
  20.  
  21. Install the four ignition coils.
  22.  
  23. Check that all tubes, hoses, and connectors are installed correctly.
  24.  
  25. Install the engine cover.
  26.  

Civic
1.7L Engine
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Drain the engine oil.
  4.  
  5. Remove the ignition coils, as outlined in the Engine Electrical Section.
  6.  
  7. Remove the harness holder and throttle cable clamps.
  8.  
  9. Install the ignition coils.
  10.  
  11. Unfasten the retainers, then remove the cylinder head cover and gasket.
  12.  

To install:

  1. Thoroughly clean the head cover gasket and the groove.
  2.  
  3. Install the head cover gasket (A) in the groove of the cylinder head cover (B). Seat the head cover gasket in the recesses for the camshaft first, then work it into the groove around the outside edges. Make sure the head cover gasket is seated securely in the corners of the recesses (C) with no gap.

  5. Check that the mating surfaces are clean and dry.
  6.  
  7. Apply liquid gasket, P/N 08717-0004, 08718-0001, 08718-0003, or 08718-0009, to the head cover gasket at the four corners of the recesses (A).
    NOTE
    Do not install the parts if 4 minutes or more have elapsed since applying liquid gasket. Instead, reapply liquid gasket after removing the old residue.

  9. Hold the head cover gasket in the groove by placing your fingers on the camshaft holder contacting surfaces (top of the semicircles). Set the spark plug seal (A) on the spark plug tubes. Once the cylinder head cover (B) is on the cylinder head, slide the cover slightly back and forth to seat the head cover gasket. Inspect the cover washers (C). Replace any washer that is damaged or deteriorated.

  11. Tighten the bolts in two or three steps, in sequence, to a final torque of 7.2 ft. lbs. (9.8 Nm).

  13. Install the harness holder and throttle cable clamps.
  14.  
  15. Install the ignition coils.
  16.  
  17. Check that all tubes, hoses, and connectors are installed correctly.
  18.  
  19. After assembly, wait at least 30 minutes before filling the engine with oil.
  20.  

1.8L Engine
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Drain the engine oil.
  4.  
  5. Remove the harness cover.
  6.  
  7. Remove the injector cover.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the alternator connector (A) and BLK wire (B) from the alternator.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the A/C compressor clutch connector (C), and remove the harness clamp (D).

  13. Remove the dipstick and breather hose.
  14.  
  15. Remove the cylinder head cover retainers and cover.
  16.  

To install:

  1. Thoroughly clean the head cover gasket and the groove.
  2.  
  3. Install the head cover gasket in the groove of the cylinder head cover.
  4.  
  5. Check that the mating surfaces are clean and dry.
  6.  
  7. Apply liquid gasket, P/N 08717-0004, 08718-0001, 08718-0002, 08718-0003, or 08718-0009, on the oil pump mating areas.
    NOTE
    Do not install components if too much time has passed after applying the liquid gasket (for P/N 08718-0002, no more than 4 minutes, for all others, no more than 5 minutes). Instead, remove the old residue and reapply the liquid gasket.

  9. Install the cylinder head cover, and tighten the bolts in two or three steps. In the final step, tighten all the bolts, in sequence, to 7.2 ft. lbs. (9.8 Nm).

    Wait at least 30 minutes before filling the engine with oil. Do not run the engine for at least 3 hours after installing the head cover.

  11. Install the dipstick and breather hose.
  12.  
  13. Connect the alternator connector and BLK wire to the alternator.
  14.  
  15. Connect the A/C compressor clutch connector, and install the harness clamp.
  16.  
  17. Install the front harness holder to the bracket, then tighten the four bolts securing the harness holders.
  18.  
  19. Connect the four ignition coil connectors.
  20.  
  21. Install the injector cover.
  22.  
  23. Install the harness cover.
  24.  
  25. Connect the negative battery cable.
  26.  

2.0L Engine
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Drain the engine oil.
  4.  
  5. Remove the intake manifold cover.
  6.  
  7. Remove the four ignition coils, as outlined in the Engine Electrical Section.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the evaporative emission (EVAP) canister purge valve connector.
  10.  
  11. Remove the dipstick and the breather hose.
  12.  
  13. Remove two bolts securing the evaporative emission (EVAP) canister purge valve bracket.
  14.  
  15. Remove the cylinder head cover.
  16.  

To install:

  1. Thoroughly clean the head cover gasket and the groove.
  2.  
  3. Install the head cover gasket in the groove of the cylinder head cover.
  4.  
  5. Check that the mating surfaces are clean and dry.
  6.  
  7. Apply liquid gasket, P/N 08717-0004, 08718-0001, 08718-0002, 08718-0003, or 08718-0009, on the chain case and the No. 5 rocker shaft holder mating areas.
    NOTE
    Do not install components if too much time has passed after applying the liquid gasket (for P/N 08718-0002, no more than 4 minutes, for all others, no more than 5 minutes). Instead, remove the old residue and reapply the liquid gasket.

  13. Install two bolts securing the evaporative emission (EVAP) canister purge valve bracket.
  14.  
  15. Install the breather hose and the dipstick.
  16.  
  17. Connect the evaporative emission (EVAP) canister purge valve connector.
  18.  
  19. Install the four ignition coils.
  20.  
  21. Install the intake manifold cover.
  22.  
  23. Connect the negative battery cable.
  24.  

S2000
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Drain the engine oil.
  4.  
  5. On 2001-05 models, detach the camshaft position (CMP) sensor A (top dead center (TDC) sensor 1) connector and CMP sensor B (TDC sensor 2) connector.
  6.  
  7. On 2006 models, disconnect the camshaft position (CMP) sensor connector.
  8.  
  9. Remove the dipstick (A), positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) hose (B), and breather hose (C).
  10.  
  11. Remove the harness clamps (A).
  12.  
  13. Remove the ignition coil, as outlined in the Engine Electrical Section.
  14.  
  15. Remove the cylinder head cover.
  16.  

To install:

  1. Thoroughly clean the head cover gasket and the groove.
  2.  
  3. Install the head cover gasket in the groove of the cylinder head cover.
  4.  
  5. Set the spark plug seal (A) on the spark plug tube. Install the cylinder head cover (B) on the cylinder head.
    WARNING
    Take care not to damage the spark plug seals when installing the cylinder head cover. Visually inspect the spark plug seals for damage. Inspect the cylinder head cover washers. Replace any washers and rubber seals that are damaged or deteriorated.

  7. Clean the washer mating surfaces of the cylinder head cover.
  8.  
  9. Install the head cover washers. Make sure the rubber seals are securely seated on the cylinder head cover.
  10.  
  11. Tighten the bolts in two or three steps. In the final step, tighten all bolts, in sequence, to 8.7 ft. lbs (12 Nm).

  13. Install the ignition coil, as outlined in the Engine Electrical Section.
  14.  
  15. Install the harness clamps.
  16.  
  17. Install the positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) hose (A) and breather hose (B), then insert the dipstick (C).
  18.  
  19. ON 2001-05 models, attach the CMP sensor A (TDC sensor 1) connector and CMP sensor B (TDC sensor 2) connector.
  20.  
  21. On 2006 models, connect the camshaft position (CMP) sensor connector.
    WARNING
    Wait at least 30 minutes before filling the engine with oil. Do not run the engine for at least 3 hours after installing the head cover.

  23. Connect the negative battery cable.
