NOTE
The radio may contain a coded theft protection circuit. Always obtain the code number before disconnecting the battery. If the vehicle is equipped with 4WS, the steering control unit is shut down when the battery is disconnected. After connecting the battery, turn the steering wheel lock-to-lock to reset the steering control unit.

Accord
2.3L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  6.  
  7. Drain the engine oil into a sealable container. Install the drain bolt with a new gasket and tighten to 33 ft. lbs. (44 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Front wheels and the splash shield
     
    Center beam

    Oxygen (O 2 S) sensor electrical connector
     
    Bolts from the support bracket on the exhaust pipe
     
    Nuts attaching the exhaust pipe to the exhaust manifold and the catalytic converter
     
    Exhaust pipe and discard the gaskets
     
    Converter cover, if equipped with an automatic transaxle
     
    Clutch cover, if equipped with a manual transaxle
     
    Oil pan nuts and bolts (in a criss-cross pattern) and the oil pan; if necessary, use a mallet to tap the corners of the oil pan. DO NOT pry on the pan to get it loose
     

  10.  
  11. Clean the oil pan mounting surface of old gasket material and engine oil.
  12.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    New oil pan gasket to the oil pan. Apply liquid gasket to the corners of the curved section of the gasket.
     
    Oil pan to the engine
     
    Oil pan nuts and bolts and tighten the nuts and bolts in sequence. Tighten the nuts and bolts in 2 steps to 10 ft. lbs. (14 Nm).
     
    Torque converter cover or clutch cover, as applicable. Tighten the bolts to 108 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
     
    Exhaust pipe with new gaskets and new locknuts. Tighten the nuts attaching the exhaust pipe to the manifold to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm) and tighten the nuts attaching the exhaust pipe to the catalytic converter to 25 ft. lbs. (33 Nm).
     
    Bolts to the exhaust pipe support bracket and tighten to 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm)
     
    O 2 S electrical connector
     
    Center beam and tighten the mounting bolts to 43 ft. lbs. (60 Nm)
     
    Splash shield and tighten the mounting bolts to 84 inch lbs. (10 Nm)
     
    Front wheels
     

  2.  
  3. Lower the vehicle and fill the engine with oil.
  4.  
  5. Connect the negative battery cable and enter the radio security code.
  6.  
  7. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  8.  

2.4L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Note the radio security code and the radio presets. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the battery positive cable. Remove the battery. Remove the air cleaner housing. Remove the battery base.
  6.  
  7. If equipped with manual transaxle remove the clutch slave cylinder and clutch line bracket mounting bolt.
  8.  
  9. Remove the ground cable. Remove the transaxle upper mount/bracket assembly.
  10.  
  11. Remove the front mount stop. Remove the front mount bolt.
  12.  
  13. Remove the rear mount stop. Remove the rear mount bolt.
  14.  
  15. Raise and support the vehicle safely. Drain the engine oil. Remove the front tires.
  16.  
  17. Disconnect the stabilizer links. Remove the left side damper fork. Disconnect the left side suspension lower arm ball joint.
  18.  
  19. Remove the left side driveshaft. Remove the nuts securing the transaxle lower front mount and transaxle lower rear mount.
  20.  
  21. Use a transaxle jack and support the transaxle assembly. Remove the stiffener.
  22.  
  23. Remove the oil pan retaining bolts. Drive an oil pan seal cutter tool between the oil pan and engine block. Cut the oil pan seal by striking the side of the tool along the oil pan
  24.  
  25. Remove the oil pan from the vehicle.
  26.  

To install:

  1. Remove any old gasket from the mating surfaces. Be sure these surfaces are clean and dry.
  2.  
  3. Apply liquid gasket, part number 08717-004, 08718-0001, 08718-0003 or 08718-0009 evenly to the engine block mating surface of the oil pan.
    NOTE
    Do not install the parts if more than four minutes have elapsed since applying the liquid gasket. Instead, reapply after removing the previous coating material.

  4.  
  5. Position the oil pan in place. Tighten the oil pan retaining bolts in two or three steps to specification and in the proper sequence.

  7. Continue the installation in the reverse order of the removal procedure.
  8.  
  9. After assembly, wait at least thirty minutes before filling the engine with clean engine oil.
  10.  
  11. Do not run the engine for at least three hours after installing the oil pan.
  12.  
  13. As required, reprogram the power window control unit as follows.
  14.  
  15. Turn the ignition switch ON. Lower the window, all the way down. Open the driver-s side door.
  16.  
  17. Turn the ignition switch OFF. Push and hold the drivers window DOWN switch. Turn the ignition switch ON. Release the driver-s window DOWN switch. This must be done within five seconds.
  18.  
  19. Repeat the above step three more times. Wait one second.
  20.  
  21. Confirm that the AUTO UP and AUTO DOWN do not work. If they work repeat the procedure, paying close attention to the five second time limit
  22.  
  23. Move the driver-s window all the way down by holding the drivers window DOWN switch to the AUTO DOWN position.
  24.  
  25. Pull up and hold the driver-s window UP switch to the AUTO UP position until the window reaches the fully closed position. Hold the switch for one second.
  26.  
  27. Confirm that the power window master switch has been reset by using the driver-s window AUTO UP and DOWN function.
  28.  
  29. If the AUTO UP and DOWN feature is still not working, repeat the complete procedure, paying close attention to the five second time limit.
  30.  
  31. Set the clock.
  32.  

3.0L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Note the radio security code and the radio presets. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Raise and support the vehicle safely. Drain the engine oil.
  6.  
  7. Remove the exhaust pipe. Remove the torque converter cover. Remove the two lower transaxle retaining bolts.
  8.  
  9. Remove the oil pan retaining bolts. Using a flat bladed tool, carefully separate the oil pan from the engine block. Remove the oil pan from the vehicle.
  10.  

To install:

  1. Remove any old gasket from the mating surfaces. Be sure these surfaces are clean and dry.
  2.  
  3. Apply liquid gasket, part number 08717-004, 08718-0001, 08718-0003 or 08718-0009 evenly to the engine block mating surface of the oil pan.
    NOTE
    Do not install the parts if more than four minutes have elapsed since applying the liquid gasket. Instead, reapply after removing the previous coating material.

  4.  
  5. Position the oil pan in place. Tighten the oil pan retaining bolts in two or three steps to specification and in the proper sequence.

  7. Continue the installation in the reverse order of the removal procedure.

  9. After assembly, wait at least thirty minutes before filling the engine with clean engine oil.

  14.  
  15. Turn the ignition switch ON. Lower the window, all the way down. Open the driver-s side door.

  17. Turn the ignition switch OFF. Push and hold the drivers window DOWN switch. Turn the ignition switch ON. Release the driver-s window DOWN switch. This must be done within five seconds.
  18.  
  19. Repeat the above step three more times. Wait one second.
  20.  
  21. Confirm that the AUTO UP and AUTO DOWN do not work. If they work repeat the procedure, paying close attention to the five second time limit
  22.  
  23. Move the driver-s window all the way down by holding the drivers window DOWN switch to the AUTO DOWN position.
  24.  
  25. Pull up and hold the driver-s window UP switch to the AUTO UP position until the window reaches the fully closed position. Hold the switch for one second.
  26.  
  27. Confirm that the power window master switch has been reset by using the driver-s window AUTO UP and DOWN function.
  28.  
  29. If the AUTO UP and DOWN feature is still not working, repeat the complete procedure, paying close attention to the five second time limit.
  30.  
  31. Set the clock.
  32.  

Civic
1.7L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Note the radio security code and the radio presets. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Drain the engine oil. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  6.  
  7. On the D17A2 engine, disconnect the primary heated oxygen sensor connector and the secondary heated oxygen sensor connector. Remove the exhaust pipe/three way catalytic converter.
  8.  
  9. On the D17A6 engine, disconnect the third heated oxygen sensor connector. Remove the exhaust pipe/three way catalytic converter.
  10.  
  11. On the D17A1 engine, remove the exhaust pipe/muffler assembly.
  12.  
  13. Remove the oil pan retaining bolts. Remove the oil pan from the vehicle.
  14.  

To install:

  1. Remove any old gasket from the mating surfaces. Be sure these surfaces are clean and dry.
  2.  
  3. Apply liquid gasket, part number 08717-004, 08718-0001, 08718-0003 or 08718-0009 on the oil pump and engine block end cover mating surfaces (steel pan) and on the pan mating surface of the block and the inner threads of the bolt holes (aluminum pan).
    NOTE
    Do not install the parts if more than four minutes have elapsed since applying the liquid gasket. Instead, reapply after removing the previous coating material.

  4.  
  5. On vehicles equipped with the steel pan, apply liquid gasket at the four corners of the pan recesses, prior to installation. Once again, do not install the parts if more than four minutes have elapsed since applying the liquid gasket. Instead, reapply after removing the previous coating material.
  6.  
  7. Install the oil pan. Torque the retaining bolts to specification and in the proper sequence.

  9. Continue the installation in the reverse order of the removal procedure.
  10.  
  11. After assembly, wait at least thirty minutes before filling the engine with clean engine oil.
  12.  
  13. Reprogram the ECM/PCM engine idle characteristics. Be sure all electrical items are OFF.
  14.  
  15. Start the engine. Hold the idle speed at 3000 RPM-s in park or neutral until the radiator fan comes on or the temperature reached 194 degrees.
  16.  
  17. Let the engine idle for about five minutes with the throttle fully closed.
  18.  
  19. If the radiator fan comes on during the five minutes, do not count this toward the five minute programming time.
  20.  
  21. Set the clock.
  22.  

1.8L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Note the radio security code and the radio presets. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Remove the drive belt. Remove the air conditioning condenser fan shroud.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the compressor electrical connectors. Remove the compressor retaining bolts, and position it to the side without discharging the system.
  8.  
  9. Raise and support the vehicle safely. Remove the splash shield. Drain the engine oil.
  10.  
  11. Remove the exhaust pipe. Properly support the oil pan. Remove the lower torque rod. Remove the oil pan support tool.
  12.  
  13. Remove the lower torque rod bracket. Remove the air conditioning compressor bracket.
  14.  
  15. If equipped with automatic transaxle, remove the shift cable cover. Remove the torque converter cover.
  16.  
  17. Remove the clutch cover if equipped with manual transaxle.
  18.  
  19. Remove the oil pan retaining bolts. Using a flat bladed tool, carefully separate the oil pan from the engine block. Remove the oil pan from the vehicle.
  20.  

To install:

  1. Remove any old gasket from the mating surfaces. Be sure these surfaces are clean and dry.
  2.  
  3. Apply liquid gasket, part number 08717-004, 08718-0001, 08718-0003 or 08718-0009 evenly to the engine block mating surface of the oil pan.
    NOTE
    Do not install the parts if more than five minutes have elapsed since applying the liquid gasket. Instead, reapply after removing the previous coating material.

  5. Install the dowel pins, using new O-rings.
  6.  
  7. Position the oil pan in place. Tighten the oil pan retaining bolts in two or three steps to specification and in the proper sequence.

  9. Continue the installation in the reverse order of the removal procedure.

2001-05 Models 2.0L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Note the radio security code and the radio presets. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Remove the subframe. Position the engine support tool, VSB02C000051, on the engine and radiator support bracket.
  6.  
  7. Raise and support the vehicle safely. Drain the engine oil.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the suspension lower arm ball joints. Remove the rear mount mounting bolts. Remove the front mount mounting bolt.
  10.  
  11. Use a marker and make alignment marks on the reference lines that align with the centers of the rear subframe mounting bolts. Remove the front subframe.
  12.  
  13. Remove the oil pan retaining bolts. Drive an oil pan seal cutter tool between the oil pan and engine block. Cut the oil pan seal by striking the side of the tool along the oil pan
  14.  
  15. Remove the oil pan from the vehicle.
  16.  

To install:

  1. Remove any old gasket from the mating surfaces. Be sure these surfaces are clean and dry.
  2.  
  3. Apply liquid gasket, part number 08717-004, 08718-0001, 08718-0003 or 08718-0009 evenly to the engine block mating surface of the oil pan.

2006 Models 2.0L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Note the radio security code and the radio presets. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Raise and support the vehicle safely. Drain the engine oil. Remove the front tires.
  6.  
  7. Remove the splash shield. Separate the stabilizer links. Separate the knuckles from the lower arms.
  8.  
  9. Remove the steering gearbox bracket. Remove the steering gearbox mounting bolt, stiffener mounting bolt and stiffener.
  10.  
  11. Remove the gearbox mounting bolt, stiffener mounting bolt and stiffener. Remove the harness clamp from the subframe
  12.  
  13. Remove the lower torque rod. Remove the front mount mounting bolt.
  14.  
  15. Use a marker and make alignment marks on the reference lines that align with the centers of the rear subframe mounting bolts.
  16.  
  17. Loosen the mid-stiffener mounting bolts, on both sides. Support the subframe using the proper support tool.
  18.  
  19. Remove the front subframe. Remove the lower torque rod bracket.
  20.  
  21. Remove the clutch cover and the transaxle mounting bolts.
  22.  
  23. Remove the oil pan retaining bolts. Using a flat bladed tool, carefully separate the oil pan from the engine block. Remove the oil pan from the vehicle.
  24.  

To install:

  1. Remove any old gasket from the mating surfaces. Be sure these surfaces are clean and dry.
  2.  
  3. Apply liquid gasket, part number 08717-004, 08718-0001, 08718-0003 or 08718-0009 evenly to the engine block mating surface of the oil pan.

    Splash shield and tighten the mounting bolts to 84 inch lbs. (10 Nm)
     
    Front wheels

  3. Lower the vehicle and fill the engine with oil.
  4.  
  5. Connect the negative battery cable and enter the radio security code.
  6.  
  7. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  8.  
  9. If equipped with 4WS, turn the steering wheel lock-to-lock to reset the 4WS control unit.

  27. Confirm that the power window master switch has been reset by using the driver-s window AUTO UP and DOWN function.
