Prelude
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.
  5. Drain the engine oil into a sealable container.
  6.
  7. Turn the engine to align the timing marks and set cylinder No.1 to TDC. The white mark on the crankshaft pulley should align with the pointer on the timing belt cover.
  8.
  9. Remove or disconnect the following:

Valve cover and upper timing belt cover

Power steering pump belt and the alternator belt, also the air conditioning belt if so equipped

Crankshaft pulley and the lower timing belt cover

Balancer belt and the timing belt. Be sure to mark the rotation of the timing belt if it is going to be reused.

Timing belt and balancer belt tensioners

Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor, if equipped

Timing belt drive pulley and key from the crankshaft

Balancer driven pulley, by inserting a suitable tool into the maintenance hole in the front balancer shaft.

  10.
  11. Align the rear timing balancer pulley using a 6 x 100mm bolt or rod. Mark the bolt or rod at a point 2.9 in. (74mm) from the end. Remove the bolt from the maintenance hole on the side of the block; insert the bolt/rod into the hole. Align the 74mm mark with the face of the hole. This pin will hold the shaft in place.
  12.
  13. Remove or disconnect the following:

Balancer gear case and the dowel pins. Discard the O-ring.

Balancer driven gear attaching bolt and the balancer driven gear

Oil pan and the oil screen. Discard the screen gasket.

Oil pump mounting bolts and oil pump assembly

Dowel pins from the engine and clean the oil pump mating surfaces of old gasket material and oil. Discard the O-rings.

  14.

To install:

  1. Install the 2 dowel pins and new O-rings to the cylinder block.
  2.
  3. Be sure that the mating surfaces are clean and dry. Apply a liquid gasket evenly in a narrow bead, centered on the mating surface. Once the sealant is applied, do not wait longer than 20 minutes to install the parts; the sealant will become ineffective. After final assembly, wait at least 30 minutes before adding oil to the engine, giving the sealant time to set. To prevent leakage of oil, apply a suitable thread sealer to the inner threads of the bolt holes.
  4.
  5. Install or connect the following:
    NOTE
Before installing the balancer driven gear and the gear case, apply molybdenum disulfide (lithium grease) to the thrust surfaces of the balancer gears.

Oil pump to the engine block. Tighten the mounting bolts to 108 inch lbs. (12 Nm).

Oil screen. Tighten the screen mounting bolts and nuts to 108 inch lbs. (12 Nm).

    Oil pan

Balancer driven pulley to the front balancer belt, hold the balancer shaft in place with a suitable tool. Tighten the attaching bolt to 22 ft. lbs. (29 Nm).

Balancer driven gear to the rear balancer shaft. Tighten the bolt to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).

  6.
  7. Align the groove on the pulley edge to the pointer on the balancer gear case.
  8.
  9. Install or connect the following:

Balancer gear case to the engine and the mounting bolts and nut. The rear balancer shaft is being held in place with a 6 x 100mm bolt. Tighten the mounting bolts and nut to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).

  10.
  11. Check the alignment of the pointer on the balancer pulley to the pointer on the oil pump.
  12.
  13. Install or connect the following:

    Drive pulley to the crankshaft

CKP sensor. Tighten the mounting bolts to 108 inch lbs. (12 Nm).

    Timing belt tensioners

Timing belt and the balancer belt

Crankshaft pulley and the lower timing belt cover

Drive belts for the alternator, power steering, and air conditioning compressor. Tension the belts properly.

Valve cover and upper timing belt cover

  14.
  15. Refill the engine with clean, fresh oil.
  16.
  17. Connect the negative battery cable and enter the radio security code.
