Removal & Installation



1.7 Engine

NOTE
The original radio contains a coded anti-theft circuit. Obtain the security code number before disconnecting the battery cables.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the cooling system.

  5. Remove the timing belt
  6.  
  7. Remove the water pump retaining bolts. Remove the water pump from the engine.
  8.  

To install:

  1. Clean the water pump and O-ring mating surfaces before installation.
  2.  
  3. Install the water pump to the engine using a new O-ring. Install the timing belt.
  4.  
  5. Refill the radiator. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  6.  

1.8L, 2.0L, 2.2L & 2.4L Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the cooling system.
  4.  
  5. Remove the drive belt.
  6.  
  7. On Hatchback and 2006 Civic with 2.0L engine, remove the crankshaft pulley.
  8.  
  9. On S2000, remove the water pump pulley.
  10.  
  11. On Accord and 2006 Civic with 2.0L engine, remove the drive belt automatic tensioner.
    NOTE
    It may first be necessary to remove the power steering pump from its mounting, without disconnecting the fluid hoses.

  13. Remove the water pump retaining bolts. Remove the water pump from the engine.
  14.  

To install:

  1. Clean the water pump and O-ring mating surfaces before installation.
  2.  
  3. Install the water pump to the engine using a new O-ring.
  4.  
  5. Continue the installation in the reverse order of the removal procedure.
  6.  
  7. Refill the radiator. Start the engine and check for leaks.

2.0L Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the cooling system.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following: Negative battery cableAccessory drive beltWater pump pulleyWater pump

    Negative battery cable
     
    Accessory drive belt
     
    Water pump pulley
     
    Water pump
     

  6.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following: Water pump with a new O ring seal. Tighten the 8mm bolts to 16 ft. lbs. ( 22 Nm) and the 10mm bolt to 33 ft. lbs. (44 Nm).Water pump pulley and tighten the bolts to 10 ft. lbs. (14 Nm)Accessory drive beltNegative battery cable

    Water pump with a new O ring seal. Tighten the 8mm bolts to 16 ft. lbs. ( 22 Nm) and the 10mm bolt to 33 ft. lbs. (44 Nm).
     
    Water pump pulley and tighten the bolts to 10 ft. lbs. (14 Nm)
     
    Accessory drive belt
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  2.  
  3. Fill the cooling system.
  4.  
  5. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  6.  

2.2L And 2.3L Engines
2.2L Prelude Engine

NOTE
The original radio contains a coded anti-theft circuit. Obtain the security code number before disconnecting the battery cables.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     

  4.  
  5. Drain the cooling system.

  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Accessory drive belts, the valve cover, and the upper timing belt cover
     

  8.  
  9. Set the timing at Top Dead Center (TDC)/compression for No. 1 piston.
  10.  
  11. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Crankshaft pulley and lower timing belt cover
     
    Timing belt. Replace the timing belt if it is contaminated with oil or coolant or shows any signs of wear and damage.
     
    Crankshaft Speed Fluctuation (CKF) sensor bracket and move the sensor out of the way, if equipped. Cover the sensor with a shop towel to keep coolant off of it.
     
    Water pump from the engine block.

To install:

  1. Clean the water pump and O-ring mating surfaces before installation.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Water pump with a new O-ring. Coat only the bolt threads with liquid gasket and tighten them to 108 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
     
    Timing belt. Be sure it is fitted and adjusted properly.
     
    CKF sensor, if equipped, and tighten the bracket bolts to 108 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
     
    Lower belt cover and crankshaft pulley
     
    Upper timing belt cover, the valve cover, and the accessory drive belts

  5. Be sure the cooling system drain plug is closed. Refill and bleed the cooling system.
  6.  
  7. Connect the negative battery cable and enter the radio security code.
  8.  
  9. Start the engine, allow it to reach normal operating temperature, and check for coolant leaks.
  10.  
  11. If equipped with 4WS, and turn the steering wheel lock-to-lock to reset the 4WS control unit.
  12.  

2.3L Engine

NOTE
The original radio contains a coded anti-theft circuit. Obtain the security code number before disconnecting the battery cables.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     

  4.  
  5. Drain the cooling system.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Accessory drive belts, the valve cover, and the upper timing belt cover
     

  8.  
  9. Set the timing at Top Dead Center (TDC)/compression for No. 1 piston.
  10.  
  11. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Crankshaft pulley and lower timing belt cover

    5 water pump mounting bolts, then remove the pump and seal

  1. Clean the seal groove and mating surfaces.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following: Water pump, with a new seal. Tighten the bolts to 104 inch lbs. (12 Nm).Timing belt tensionerTiming belt.

  4.  
  5. Refill the cooling system.
  6.  
  7. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  8.  
  9. Top off the cooling system if necessary after the engine has cooled.
  10.

  3. Drain the cooling system.
  4.  
  5. Remove the timing belt.
  6.  
  7. Remove the water pump retaining bolts. Remove the water pump from the engine.
  8.  

To install:

  1. Clean the water pump and O-ring mating surfaces before installation.
