Upper Control Arm

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the vehicle safely. Remove the front tires.
  4.  
  5. On Accord, remove the front damper.
  6.  
  7. Remove the flange bolts and the wheel speed sensor harness from the upper arm.
  8.  
  9. Remove the lock pin from the upper arm ball joint. Remove the castle nut.
  10.  
  11. Remove the upper arm ball joint from the knuckle suing the proper ball joint removal tool.
  12.  
  13. Remove the flange bolts and the upper arm.
  14.  

To install:

  1. Installation is in the reverse order of the removal procedure.
  2.  
  3. On Accord, install the upper arm by inserting a rod (outside diameter 6mm, length 300mm) into the positioning holes of the frame. Place the upper arm on the rod to position it before tightening the upper arm mounting bolts.

  5. On Accord, torque the control arm retaining bolts to 23 ft. lbs.
  6.  
  7. On S2000, torque the control arm retaining bolts to 75.9 ft. lbs.
  8.  
  9. Be sure to use new flange bolts, castle nut and lock pin.
  10.  
  11. Check and adjust the vehicle's front end alignment. On Preludes equipped with 4WS, the electronic neutral check must be performed before all 4 wheels are aligned.

Accord And Prelude-2001-02 Vehicles
Accord-2003-04 Vehicles
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following: Front wheelFront strut (damper) assemblyWheel Speed Sensor (WSS) from the upper armCotter pin from the upper arm ball joint, then loosen the nutUpper ball joint from the knuckleUpper control arm mounting boltsUpper control arm

    Cotter pin from the upper arm ball joint, then loosen the nut
     
    Upper ball joint from the knuckle
     
    Upper control arm mounting bolts

  4.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following: Upper control arm and loosely install the mounting boltsUpper ball joint to the knuckle. Tighten the nut to 29 ft. lbs. (39 Nm), then tighten it up to 35 ft. lbs. (47 Nm) to align the holes to install a new cotter pin. Never loosen the nut to install the cotter pin.

    Upper ball joint to the knuckle. Tighten the nut to 29 ft. lbs. (39 Nm), then tighten it up to 35 ft. lbs. (47 Nm) to align the holes to install a new cotter pin. Never loosen the nut to install the cotter pin.

  3. To tighten the upper control arm bolts, insert a rod about 6mm in diameter by 300mm long into the positioning holes and place the upper arm on the rock to position it. Tighten the bolts to 23 ft .lbs. (31 Nm).   5. Tighten the wheel nuts to 80 ft. lbs. (110 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Check and adjust the vehicle's front end alignment.
  8.  

Civic
S2000
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.

  3. Remove or disconnect the following: Front wheelWheel speed sensor harnessUpper ball jointInner flange bolts and the upper control arm

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure, while using the following torque values: Inner flange bolts: 76 ft. lbs. (103 Nm)Upper ball joint nut: 36-43 ft. lbs. (49-59 Nm)Wheel speed sensor harness bolts: 88 inch lbs. (10 Nm)
