Removal & Installation




NOTE
The radio may contain a coded theft protection circuit. Always obtain the code number before disconnecting the battery. If the vehicle is equipped with 4WS, the steering control unit is shut down when the battery is disconnected. After connecting the battery, turn the steering wheel lock-to-lock to reset the steering control unit.

CAUTION
The fuel injection system remains under pressure, even after the engine has been turned OFF . The fuel system pressure must be relieved before disconnecting any fuel lines. Failure to follow this procedure may result in fire, explosion, or personal injury.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Relieve the fuel pressure.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:
    NOTE
    Clean the fuel line fittings before disconnecting them.



    Negative battery cable
     
    Remove the fuel filler cap
     
    Spare tire cover, if equipped
     
    Trunk floor
     
    Access panel from the floor
     
    electrical connector from the pump assembly.
     

  6.  
  7. Disconnect the quick connect fitting from the pump assembly.
  8.  
  9. Depending upon the year and engine, either use tool 07AAA-S0XA100, or equivalent, to loosen and remove the fuel tank unit locknut and the fuel tank unit, or remove the fuel tank retaining bolts and remove the fuel tank unit.
  10.  

To install:

  1. Be sure to use a new base gasket and new O-rings.
  2.  
  3. When installing the fuel tank unit, align the marks on the fuel tank and the fuel tank unit.
  4.  
  5. Make sure the electrical connections are secure and the connector firmly locked in place.
  6.  
  7. Make sure the fuel line connections are secure and the connector firmly locked in place.
  8.  
  9. Continue the installation in the reverse order of the removal procedure.

  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Relieve the fuel pressure.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:
    NOTE
    Clean the fuel line fittings before disconnecting them.



    Rear seat cushions
     
    Remove the fuel filler cap
     
    On 2006 Civic, remove the rear floor upper crossmember
     
    Fuel pump access panel
     
    Fuel pump electrical harness
     

  8.  
  9. Disconnect the quick connect fitting from the pump assembly.
  10.  
  11. Using tool 07AAA-S0XA100, or equivalent, loosen the fuel tank unit locknut. Remove the locknut and the fuel tank unit. Allow the fuel in the pump drain into the tank before removing the pump from the vehicle.
  12.  

To install:

  1. Be sure to use a new base gasket and new O-rings.
  2.  
  3. When installing the fuel tank unit, align the marks on the fuel tank and the fuel tank unit.
  4.  
  5. Make sure the electrical connections are secure and the connector firmly locked in place.
  6.  
  7. Make sure the fuel line connections are secure and the connector firmly locked in place.
  8.  
  9. Continue the installation in the reverse order of the removal procedure.

The fuel injection system remains under pressure after the engine has been turned OFF . Properly relieve fuel pressure before disconnecting any fuel lines. Failure to do so may result in fire or personal injury.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery terminal.
  4.  
  5. Relieve the fuel pressure.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:
    NOTE
    Label the fuel lines before disconnecting them.


    NOTE
    The pump sits on an angle and may require some manipulation to remove. If the pump still won't come out, loosen the fuel tank mounting nuts under the car, slide the tank downward a bit to give more clearance at the top.



    Carpet in the luggage area.
     
    Fuel pump maintenance access cover in the floor.
     
    Electrical connector at the pump unit.
     



    Fuel lines. Discard the washers from the fuel feed connection.
     
    Retaining nuts holding the pump
     
    Pump up and out of the tank.
     

  8.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    New sealing ring
     
    Fuel pump, making certain it is correctly seated and not wedged or jammed.
     
    Retaining nuts and tighten them evenly and alternately to 48 inch lbs. (6 Nm).
     
    Fuel lines. Make certain the clamp is secure; use new ones if necessary.
     
    New washers to the fuel feed connection before installing the attaching bolt. Tighten the fuel feed attaching bolt to 20 ft. lbs. (28 Nm).
     
    Fuel pump connector
     
    Negative battery cable and enter the radio security code.
     

  2.  
  3. Switch the ignition ON but do not engage the starter. The fuel pump should run for approximately 2 seconds, building pressure within the lines. Switch the ignition OFF , then ON 2 or 3 more times to build full system pressure. Check for fuel leaks.
  4.  
  5. If equipped with 4WS, start the engine and turn the steering wheel lock-to-lock to reset the 4WS control unit.
  6.  
  7. Install the maintenance access cover and seal or gasket, if used.
  8.  
  9. Reposition the carpeting in the luggage compartment.
  10.

  7. Disconnect the quick connect fitting from the pump assembly.
  8.  
  9. Remove the fuel tank retaining bolts. Remove the fuel tank unit from the vehicle.
  10.  

To install:

  1. Be sure to use a new base gasket.
  2.  
  3. When installing the fuel tank unit, align the marks on the fuel tank and the fuel tank unit.
  4.  
  5. Make sure the electrical connections are secure and the connector firmly locked in place.
  6.  
  7. Make sure the fuel line connections are secure and the connector firmly locked in place.
  8.  
  9. Continue the installation in the reverse order of the removal procedure.

  6.  

To install:
