  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following: Starter motor and tighten the bolts to 33 ft. lbs. (44 Nm)Starter motor wiring harness and tighten the battery cable terminal bolt to 84 inch lbs. (9 Nm)Negative battery cable

When installing the heavy gauge starter cable, make sure the crimped side of the terminal end is facing out.

To install:

  1. Install in the reverse order of removal.
    NOTE

2.4L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.

  3. Note the radio security code and the radio presets.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Disconnect the positive battery cable.
  6.  
  7. Drain the cooling system. Remove the intake manifold.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the starter cable from the B terminal on the solenoid. Disconnect the BLK/WHT wire from the S terminal.

  11. Remove the harness clamp. Remove the harness holder.
  12.  
  13. Remove the starter retaining bolts. Remove the started from the vehicle.
  14.  

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  2.  
  3. Reprogram the power window control unit as follows.
  4.  
  5. Turn the ignition switch ON. Lower the window, all the way down. Open the driver-s side door.
  6.  
  7. Turn the ignition switch OFF. Push and hold the drivers window DOWN switch. Turn the ignition switch ON. Release the driver-s window DOWN switch. This must be done within five seconds.
  8.  
  9. Repeat the above step three more times. Wait one second.
  10.  
  11. Confirm that the AUTO UP and AUTO DOWN do not work. If they work repeat the procedure, paying close attention to the five second time limit
  12.  
  13. Move the driver-s window all the way down by holding the drivers window DOWN switch to the AUTO DOWN position.
  14.  
  15. Pull up and hold the driver-s window UP switch to the AUTO UP position until the window reaches the fully closed position. Hold the switch for one second.
  16.  
  17. Confirm that the power window master switch has been reset by using the driver-s window AUTO UP and DOWN function.
  18.  
  19. If the AUTO UP and DOWN feature is still not working, repeat the complete procedure, paying close attention to the five second time limit.
  20.  
  21. Set the clock.
  22.  

3.0L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.

  5. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Disconnect the positive battery cable.

  7. Remove the battery. Remove the harness clamp.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the starter cable from the B terminal on the solenoid. Disconnect the BLK/WHT wire from the S terminal.

  11. Remove the starter retaining bolts. Remove the started from the vehicle.

To install:

    Starter motor wiring harness
     
    Starter motor

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Starter motor and tighten the bolts to 33 ft. lbs. (44 Nm)
     
    Starter motor wiring harness and tighten the battery cable terminal bolt to 84 inch lbs. (9 Nm)
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  2.  
  3. As required, reprogram the ECM/PCM engine idle characteristics. Be sure all electrical items are OFF.
  4.  
  5. Start the engine. Hold the idle speed at 3000 RPM-s in park or neutral until the radiator fan comes on or the temperature reached 194 degrees.
  6.  
  7. Let the engine idle for about five minutes with the throttle fully closed.
  8.  
  9. If the radiator fan comes on during the five minutes, do not count this toward the five minute programming time.
  10.  
  11. Set the clock.
  12.  

1.8L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Note the radio security code and the radio presets.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Disconnect the positive battery cable.
  6.  
  7. Raise and support the vehicle safely. Remove the exhaust pipe. Remove the intake manifold bracket.
  8.  
  9. Remove the harness clamps and harness connector from each clamp.
  10.  
  11. Remove the starter retaining bolts. Remove the starter from the engine.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect the starter cable from the terminal. Disconnect the connector from the S terminal. Remove the starter from the vehicle.

To install:

  7. Disconnect the knock sensor connector. Remove the bolt securing the harness bracket. Remove the intake manifold bracket.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the starter cable from the B terminal on the solenoid. Disconnect the BLK/WHT wire from the S terminal.
  10.  
  11. Remove the starter retaining bolts. Remove the started from the vehicle.

  9. Remove the harness clamp. Remove the starter retaining bolts. Remove the starter from the engine.

  11. Disconnect the starter cable from the B terminal on the solenoid. Disconnect the BLK/WHT wire from the S terminal.
  12.  
  13. Remove the starter retaining bolts. Remove the started from the vehicle.

2.0L & 2.2L Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Note the radio security code and the radio presets.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Disconnect the positive battery cable.
  6.  
  7. On 2001-05 vehicles, disconnect the air hose and breather pipe. Remove the air cleaner housing and air cleaner assembly. Disconnect the air control solenoid valve connector and vacuum hose. Remove the harness clamps. Remove the intake air cleaner housing.
  8.  
  9. On 2006 vehicles, disconnect the intake air temperature sensor connector and breather pipe. Remove the manifold absolute sensor harness from the holder. Remove the air cleaner housing cover and the air cleaner assembly. Remove the IAT sensor harness clamps and the intake air housing.
  10.  
  11. Remove the drive belt. Remove the alternator.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect the starter cable from the B terminal on the solenoid. Disconnect the BLK/WHT wire from the S terminal.
  14.  
  15. Remove the starter retaining bolts. Remove the started from the vehicle.
  16.  

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  2.  
  3. On 2001-05 vehicles, reprogram the ECM engine idle characteristics. Be sure all electrical items are OFF.
