Transaxle Removal & Installation

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Make sure you have the radio and navigation system anti-theft codes.
  4.  
  5. Set the wheels in the straight-ahead position and lock the steering.
  6.  
  7. Drain the power steering reservoir.
  8.  
  9. Make sure that the ignition switch is in the OFF position.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the negative, then the positive battery cables.
  12.  
  13. Remove the battery and battery tray.
  14.  
  15. Remove the intake manifold cover.
  16.  
  17. Remove the intake air duct, resonator and air cleaner housing.
  18.  
  19. Remove the battery base and bracket.
  20.  
  21. Remove the front bulkhead cover.
  22.  
  23. Raise and support the vehicle.
  24.  
  25. Remove the splash shield.
  26.  
  27. Drain the transaxle fluid. When the fluid is drained, install the drain plug and new sealing washer. Torque the plug to 36 ft. lbs. (49 Nm).

  29. Matchmark and disconnect the steering coupler.
  30.  
  31. Disconnect the power steering outlet line at the pump and remove the hose clamp bolt.
  32.  
  33. Disconnect the transaxle breather hose at the transaxle.
  34.  
  35. Disconnect the solenoid wiring.
  36.  
  37. Disconnect the starter wiring at the starter.
  38.  
  39. Remove the dipstick.
  40.  
  41. Remove the starter.
  42.  
  43. Remove the shift cable bracket nuts.
  44.  
  45. Disconnect the shift cable from the control lever.
  46.  
  47. Disconnect all wiring from the transaxle.
  48.  
  49. Disconnect the cooler hoses.
  50.  
  51. Disconnect the transfer case breather.
  52.  
  53. Remove the connector bracket from the front cylinder head and use that bolt hole to attach the balancer bar front arm.
  54.  
  55. Remove the harness clamp bracket from the rear head and use that bolt hole to attach the balancer bar rear arm.
  56.  
  57. Remove the caps from the front strut mounting nuts. Position the engine hanger adapters (VSB02C000024) with the FRONT mark facing forward, over the flange nuts.

  59. Install the balancer bar (VSB02C000019):
    1. Attach the front arm (A) to the front head with spacer (B) and a 10x1.25mm bolt (C)
    2.  
    3. Attach the rear arm (D) to the rear head with an 8x1.25mm bolt (E).

  61. Install the support hanger (AAR-T-12566):
    1. Attach the hook to the slotted hole in the balancer bar.
    2.  
    3. Tighten the wing nut (F) by hand to lift and support the engine/transaxle assembly.

  63. Remove and discard the front engine mount nut.
  64.  
  65. Remove the subframe stiffener.
  66.  
  67. Remove the exhaust pipe and bracket.
  68.  
  69. Separate the lower arms from the knuckles.
  70.  
  71. Separate the stabilizer bar links from the knuckles.
  72.  
  73. Separate the tie rod ends from the knuckles.
  74.  
  75. Disconnect the transfer case breather.
  76.  
  77. Matchmark and disconnect the driveshaft from the transfer case.
  78.  
  79. Remove the transfer case.
  80.  
  81. Remove the torque converter cover.
  82.  
  83. Remove the 8 torque converter-to-flexplate bolts.
  84.  
  85. Disconnect the power steering pressure switch.
  86.  
  87. Remove the power steering hose clamp from the subframe.
  88.  
  89. Remove the 4 transaxle lower mount nuts.
  90.  
  91. Matchmark the body and subframe as shown.

  95. Remove the six 12x1.25mm bolts (A) securing the subframe stiffeners (B), the 4 subframe mounting bolts (C) and the stiffeners. Then, lower the subframe (D).

  97. Remove the 3 rear mount bracket bolts.

  99. Remove the transaxle lower mounts.

  101. Remove the halfshafts.

  103. Remove the exhaust manifold bracket and heat shield.

  105. Remove the intermediate shaft.
  106.  
  107. Remove the front mount bracket.
  108.  
  109. Remove the transaxle-to-engine bolts.
  110.  
  111. lower the transaxle by loosing the wing nut of the support and tile the engine just enough for the transaxle to clear the frame.
  112.  
  113. Slide a jack under the transaxle and roll it out.
  114.  

To install:

  1. Make sure the dowel pins are installed in the converter housing.
  2.  
  3. Install the transmission lower mounts. Torque to 33 ft. lbs. (44 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Mate the transaxle to the engine. Install the bolts and torque to 47 ft. lbs. (64 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the front bracket using new bolts. Torque to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the intermediate shaft.
  10.  
  11. Install the halfshafts.
  12.  
  13. Install the subframe, aligning the matchmarks and tightening the bolts as shown.

  15. Install the rear mount bracket bolts. Torque to 28 ft. lbs. (38 Nm).

  17. The remainder of installation is the reverse of removal. Observe the following torques:

    Lower mount nuts: 33 ft. lbs. (44 Nm)
     
    Torque converter bolts, in 2 equal steps, alternating the tightening sequence, to 104 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
     
    Torque converter cover: 104 inch lbs. (12 Nm)
     
    Transfer case: 38 ft. lbs. (51 Nm)
     
    Driveshaft-to-transfer case: 53 ft. lbs. (72 Nm)
     
    Tie rod end ball stud nut: 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm)
     
    Lower ball joint stud nut: 65-72 ft. lbs. (88-98 Nm)
     
    Stabilizer link nut: 58 ft. lbs. (78 Nm)
     
    Exhaust pipe-to-converter: 25 ft. lbs. (33 Nm)
     
    Exhaust pipe hanger: 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm)
     
    Exhaust pipe-to-manifold: 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm)
     
    Stiffener (new bolts): 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm)
     
    Front mount nut (new): 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm)
     
    Connector bracket-to-front head: 33 ft. lbs. (44 Nm)
     
    Harness bracket-to-rear head: 20 ft. lbs. (26 Nm)
