Parking Brake Shoes

Adjustment



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. With the parking brake released, back off the adjusting nut at the pedal.
  4.  
  5. Remove the access plug from the drum.
  6.  
  7. Using an adjusting spoon, turn up the ratchet teeth on the adjuster until the shoes lock the drum. Then, back off 10 clicks and install the plug.
  8.  
  9. Press the parking brake pedal with about 66 lbs. of force. The pedal should travel 10-12 clicks. If it travels more than that:
    1. Turn the adjusting nut at the pedal until the brake shoes drag slightly when the rear wheels are turned.
    2.  
    3. Back off the adjusting nut in half-turn increments until the proper pressure gives the proper number of clicks.

Break-In Procedure



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Adjust the parking brake shoes.
  4.  
  5. While driving the vehicle safely, pull the parking brake release lever.
  6.  
  7. Press the parking brake pedal 2-4 clicks.
  8.  
  9. Drive the vehicle for one-quarter mile at no more that 30 mph.
  10.  
  11. Stop the vehicle and release the parking brake for 10 minutes to allow the drums to cool.
  12.  
  13. Repeat the procedure 3 more times.
  14.  
  15. Recheck the adjustment.

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the rear wheels.
  4.  
  5. Release the parking brake tension.
  6.  
  7. Remove the caliper and support it out of the way.
  8.  
  9. Remove the rotor/drum assembly.
  10.  
  11. Remove the upper return springs.
  12.  
  13. Remove the hold-down pins and retainers.
  14.  
  15. Remove the connecting rod.
  16.  
  17. Remove the lower return spring and adjuster.
  18.  
  19. Remove the forward shoe.
  20.  
  21. Disconnect the cable and remove the rear shoe.
  22.  
  23. Installation is the reverse of removal. Clean the backing plate thoroughly and apply a suitable brake grease to all mounting points and the adjuster threads. Adjust the parking brake
