Transfer Case Unit

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Place the transaxle in N .
  6.  
  7. Drain the transaxle. When the fluid is drained, install the drain plug, using a new washer and torque to 36 ft. lbs. (49 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Remove the subframe stiffener.
  10.  
  11. Remove the exhaust pipe and bracket.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect the transfer case breather.
  14.  
  15. Matchmark the driveshaft and disconnect it from the transfer case.
  16.  
  17. Remove the bolts and remove the transfer case.

  19. Installation is the reverse of removal. Observe the following torques:

    Transfer case bolts: 38 ft. lbs. (51 Nm)
     
    Driveshaft bolts: 53 ft. lbs. (72 Nm)
     
    Exhaust pipe-to-converter: 25 ft. lbs. (33 Nm)
     
    Exhaust pipe hanger: 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm)
     
    Exhaust pipe-to-manifold: 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm)
     
    Stiffener (new bolts): 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm)
