Operation



The idle speed control actuator sensor is a double coil type driven by separate driver stages in the ECM. Depending on the pulse duty factor, the equilibrium of the magnetic forces of the two coils will result in different angles of the motor. A bypass hose line is positioned, parallel to the throttle valve where the idle speed actuator is inserted.

The intake air volume at idle is controlled by opening or closing the motor valve provided in the air path that bypasses the throttle valve.

Removal & Installation



  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the connector from the sensor.
  4.  
  5. Remove the sensor retaining screws.
  6.  
  7. Remove the sensor from its mounting.
  8.  

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  2.  

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

  3. Disconnect the connector from the sensor.
  4.  
  5. Remove the sensor retaining screws.
  6.  
  7. Remove the sensor from its mounting.
  8.

Testing



  1. Disconnect the connector at the sensor. Connect an ohmmeter.
  2.  
  3. On 1999-2003 vehicles, measure the resistance between terminal 1 and 2, specification should be 10.5-14 ohms. Measure the resistance between terminal 2 and 3, specification should be 10-12.5 ohms at 68 degrees F.
  4.  
  5. On 2004-2005 vehicles, measure the resistance between terminal 1 and 2, specification should be 16.6-18.6 ohms. Measure the resistance between terminal 2 and 3, specification should be 14.5-16.5 ohms at 68 degrees F.
  6.  
  7. If the measured value is not within specification, replace the sensor.
  8.  

  1. Disconnect the connector at the sensor. Connect an ohmmeter.
  2.  
  3. Measure the resistance between terminal 1 and 2, specification should be 10.5-14 ohms. Measure the resistance between terminal 2 and 3, specification should be 10-12.5 ohms at 68 degrees F.
  4.  
  5. If the measured value is not within specification, replace the sensor.
  6.  

  1. Check for the sound of the stepper motor after the ignition is switched ON (but without starting the motor).
  2.  
  3. If the operation sound cannot be heard, check the stepper motor-s circuit.
  4.  
  5. If the circuit is normal, measure the resistance between terminals 2-3 and/or 1, specification should be 28-33 ohms at 68 degrees F.
  6.  
  7. Measure the resistance between terminals 5-4 and/or 6, specification should be 28-33 ohms at 68 degrees F.
  8.  
  9. Replace the component, as required.
  10.  

2.0L Engine
  1. Disconnect the connector at the sensor. Connect an ohmmeter.
  2.  
  3. Measure the resistance between terminal 1 and 2, specification should be 10.5-14 ohms. Measure the resistance between terminal 2 and 3, specification should be 10-12.5 ohms at 68 degrees F.
  4.  
  5. If the measured value is not within specification, replace the sensor.
  6.  

2.4L Engine
  1. Disconnect the connector at the sensor. Connect an ohmmeter.
  2.  
  3. Measure the resistance between terminal 1 and 2, specification should be 10.5-14 ohms.
  4.  
  5. Measure the resistance between terminal 2 and 3, specification should be 10-12.5 ohms at 68 degrees F.
  6.  
  7. If the measured value is not within specification, replace the sensor.
  8.  

  1. Disconnect the connector at the sensor. Connect an ohmmeter.
  2.  
  3. Measure the resistance between terminal 3 and 2, specification should be 10.5-14 ohms.
  4.  
  5. Measure the resistance between terminal 1 and 3, specification should be 10-12.5 ohms at 68 degrees F.
  6.  
  7. If the measured value is not within specification, replace the sensor.
  8.  

  1. Disconnect the connector at the sensor. Connect an ohmmeter.
  2.  
  3. Measure the resistance between terminal 1 and 2, specification should be 17.0-18.2 ohms.
  4.  
  5. Measure the resistance between terminal 2 and 3, specification should be 15.0-16.0 ohms.
  6.  
  7. If the measured value is not within specification, replace the sensor.
  8.  

  1. Disconnect the connector at the sensor. Connect an ohmmeter.
  2.  
  3. Measure the resistance between terminal 3 and 2 (open), specification should be 14.5-16.5 ohms.
  4.  
  5. Measure the resistance between terminal 1 and 2 (closing), specification should be 16.6-18.6 ohms at 68 degrees F.
  6.  
  7. If the measured value is not within specification, replace the sensor.
  8.  

2.5L Engine
  1. Disconnect the connector at the sensor. Connect an ohmmeter.
  2.  
  3. Measure the resistance between terminal 1 and 2, specification should be 10.5-14 ohms.
  4.  
  5. Measure the resistance between terminal 2 and 3, specification should be 10-12.5 ohms at 68 degrees F.
  6.  
  7. If the measured value is not within specification, replace the sensor.
  8.  

  1. Disconnect the connector at the sensor. Connect an ohmmeter.
  2.  
  3. Measure the resistance between terminal 3 and 2, specification should be 10.5-14 ohms.
  4.  
  5. Measure the resistance between terminal 1 and 3, specification should be 10-12.5 ohms at 68 degrees F.
  6.  
  7. If the measured value is not within specification, replace the sensor.
  8.  

2.7L Engine
  1. Disconnect the connector at the sensor. Connect an ohmmeter.
  2.  
  3. Measure the resistance between terminal 1 and 2, specification should be 17.0-18.2 ohms.
  4.  
  5. Measure the resistance between terminal 2 and 3, specification should be 15.0-16.0 ohms.
  6.  
  7. If the measured value is not within specification, replace the sensor.
  8.  

  1. Disconnect the connector at the sensor. Connect an ohmmeter.
  2.  
  3. Measure the resistance between terminal 3 and 2, specification should be 10.5-14 ohms. Measure the resistance between terminal 1 and 3, specification should be 10-12.5 ohms at 68 degrees F.
  4.  
  5. If the measured value is not within specification, replace the sensor.
  6.  

  1. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position.
  2.  
  3. Remove the valve and check the throttle bore, throttle plate and valve passages for damage and chocking. Repair/clean as required.
  4.  
  5. Reinstall the valve.
  6.  
  7. With the engine off and the ignition switch in the ON position, connect the scan tool.
  8.  
  9. Select -IDLE SPEED ACTUATOR- parameter on the -ACTUATION TEST- mode.
  10.  
  11. Activate the ISCA valve, by pressing the -STAT- key.
  12.  
  13. Check the ISCA for a clicking sound and visually verify that the valve opens and closes. Repeat numerous times to ensure a working valve.
  14.  
  15. If the valve is operating properly, check for poor connection between the ECM and the component.
  16.  
  17. If not, check the valve for contamination, deterioration or damage.
  18.  
  19. Substitute the valve with a known good component, check for proper operation. If problem corrected replace the sensor.
