Clear Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) if applicable.

  1. Inspect Coolant Temperature Sensor connector connection, check terminal for poor connections, loose wires, bent, broken or corroded pins, and then verify that the connector is always securely fastened.

  3. Slightly shake the connector and wiring harness vertically and horizontally.
  4.  
  5. Repair or replace the Coolant Temperature Sensor if component shows to have a physical problem.
  6.  

  1. To measure the power supply voltage, disconnect the connector. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.
  2.  
  3. On 1999 vehicles measure between 2 of the harness side and ground. The voltage should be 4.6-4.8 volts.
  4.  
  5. On 2000-2005 vehicles measure between 1 of the harness side and ground. The voltage should be 4.8-5.2 volts.
  6.  
  7. Using an ohmmeter, check for continuity of the ground circuit.
  8.  
  9. On 1999 vehicles measure between 1 of the harness side and ground.
  10.  
  11. On 2000-2005 vehicles equipped with the SOHC engine, measure between terminal 3 of the harness side and ground.
  12.  
  13. On 2000-2005 vehicles equipped with the DOHC engine, measure between terminal 2 of the harness side and ground.
  14.  

  1. Remove the sensor from the engine.
  2.  
  3. With the sensing portion of the sensor immersed in hot water, check the resistance.
  4.  
  5. Specification should be 0.538-0.650 kohm at 140 degrees F.
  6.  
  7. Replace the sensor, as required.
  8.  

  1. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position.
  2.  
  3. Check the resistance of the sensor connector between terminals 1 and 3.
  4.  
  5. Specification should be 2.27-2.73 kohm at 68 degrees F. and 0.30-0.32 kohm at 176 degrees F.
  6.  
  7. Replace the sensor, as required.
  8.  

  1. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position.
  2.  
  3. Check the resistance of the sensor connector between terminals 1 and ground.
  4.  
  5. Specification should be 2.31-2.59 kohm at 68 degrees F. and 0.32 kohm at 176 degrees F.
  6.  
  7. Replace the sensor, as required.
  8.  

  1. Remove the sensor.
  2.  
  3. With the temperature sensing portion of the sensor immersed in hot engine coolant, check the resistance.
  4.  
  5. Specification should be 5.9 kohms at 32 degrees F., 2.5 kohms at 68 degrees F., 1.1 kohms at 104 degrees F., 0.3 kohms at 176 degrees F. for all engines except 2004-2006 2.4L engine.
  6.  
  7. Specification should be 5.79 kohms at 32 degrees F., 2.31-2.59 kohms at 68 degrees F., 1.15kohms at 104 degrees F., 0.32 kohms at 176 degrees F. for 2004-2006 2.4L engine.
  8.  
  9. If not within specification, replace the sensor.
  10.  

  1. Remove the sensor.
  2.  
  3. With the temperature sensing portion of the sensor immersed in hot engine coolant, check the resistance.
  4.  
  5. Specification should be 5.9 kohms at 32 degrees F., 2.5 kohms at 68 degrees F., 1.1 kohms at 104 degrees F., 0.3 kohms at 176 degrees F.
  6.  
  7. If not within specification, replace the sensor.
  8.  

  1. Remove the sensor from the engine.
  2.  
  3. With the temperature sensing portion of the sensor immersed in hot engine coolant, check the resistance.
  4.  
  5. Specification should be 5.9 kohms at 32 degrees F., 2.5 kohms at 68 degrees F., 1.1 kohms at 104 degrees F., 0.3 kohms at 176 degrees F.
  6.  
  7. If not within specification, replace the sensor.
  8.  

2.0L Engine



  1. Remove the sensor from the engine.
  2.  
  3. With the sensing portion of the sensor immersed in hot water, check the resistance.
  4.  
  5. Specification should be 0.538-0.650 kohm at 140 degrees F.
  6.  
  7. Replace the sensor, as required.
  8.  

  1. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position.
  2.  
  3. Check the resistance of the sensor connector between terminals 1 and 3 (component side).
  4.  
  5. Specification should be 2.27-2.73 kohm at 68 degrees F. for 2004 vehicles and 2.31-2.59 kohm at 68 degrees F. for 2005-2005 vehicles.
  6.  
  7. Replace the sensor, as required.
  8.  

2.7L Engine



  1. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the ECTS connector.
  4.  
  5. Check the resistance of the sensor connector between terminals 1 and 3 (component side).
  6.  
  7. Specification should be 2.31-2.59 kohm at 68 degrees F.
  8.  
  9. Replace the sensor, as required.
  10.
