With a scan tool, check the signal waveform of the Crankshaft Position (CKP) and the Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor. The waveform should appear as the following illustration.

The Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor is a Hall Effect type sensor that generates voltage using a sensor and a target wheel mounted on the crankshaft. There are 58 slots in the target wheel where one is longer than the others. When the slot in the wheel aligns with the sensor, the sensor voltage output is low. When the metal tooth in the wheel aligns the sensor, the sensor voltage is high. During one crankshaft rotation there are 58 rectangular signals and one longer signal. The PCM calculates engine RPM by using the sensor-s signal and controls the injection duration and ignition timing. Using the signal differences caused by the longer slot, the PCM identifies which cylinder is at TDC.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the connector from the sensor.
  6.  
  7. Remove the bolt that retains the sensor in place.
  8.  
  9. Remove the sensor from its mounting.
  10.  

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  2.  
  3. Tighten the sensor retaining bolt to: 70-104 inch lbs. (8-12 Nm).

Testing



Specific to:

Hyundai Entourage 2007-2008

During normal operation the PCM controls all ignition functions. If either the Crankshaft Position (CKP) or Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor signal is lost, the engine will continue to run because the PCM will default to a limp home mode using the remaining sensor input. Diagnostic trouble codes are available to accurately diagnose the ignition system with an OBD2 scan tool.

  1. Inspect the CKP sensor for correct installation. Remove the CKP sensor from the engine and inspect the sensor O-ring for damage. If the sensor is loose, incorrectly installed, or damaged, replace the CKP sensor.
  2.  
  3. Engage the CKP sensor harness connector to the CKP sensor.
  4.  
  5. Connect the scan tool to the diagnostic connector.
  6.  
  7. With the ignition ON, engine OFF observe the CKP active counter parameter on the scan tool.
  8.  
  9. Pass a flat steel object across the tip of the sensor repeatedly. The CKP active counter parameter should increment with each pass of the steel object.
  10.  
  11. If the parameter does not increment, replace the CKP sensor.
