Steering Knuckles

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the front wheel and tire.
    WARNING
    Be careful not to damage the hub bolts when removing the front wheel and tire.

  6.  
  7. Remove the wheel speed sensor (A) from the knuckle.

  9. Remove the brake caliper mounting bolts (A), and then hang the brake caliper assembly (B) with a wire.
    WARNING
    Do not suspend the brake caliper assembly from the brake hose or damage may occur to the hose.

  11. Remove the split pin (B), then remove castle nut (A) and washer (C) from the front hub.

  13. Remove the ball joint assembly mounting bolt (A) from the steering knuckle.

  15. Remove the tie rod end ball joint from the knuckle.
    1. Remove the split pin and castle nut.
    2.  
    3. Disconnect the ball joint (A) from the steering knuckle using the special tool (09568-4A000).
      NOTE
      Apply a few drops of oil to the special tool at the boot contact end.

  17. Remove the brake disc (A) from the front hub assembly after removing the screws (B).

  19. Remove the strut assembly mounting bolts (A) and nuts.

  21. Remove the hub and knuckle assembly.
    WARNING
    Be careful not to damage the boot and rotor teeth.


    NOTE
    Disassemble the hub and steering knuckle assembly.

  23. Remove the snap ring (A).

  25. Remove the hub assembly from the knuckle assembly.
    1. Install the front knuckle assembly (A) on a press.
    2.  
    3. Lay a suitable adapter (B) upon the hub assembly shaft.

    5. Remove the hub assembly (B) from the knuckle assembly (A) using a press.

  27. Remove the hub bearing inner race from the hub assembly.
    1. Install a suitable tool (A) for removing the hub bearing inner race on the hub assembly.
    2.  
    3. Lay the hub assembly and tool (A) upon a suitable adapter (B).
    4.  
    5. Lay a suitable adapter (C) upon the hub assembly shaft.
    6.  
    7. Remove the hub bearing inner race (D) from the hub assembly using a press.

  29. Remove the hub bearing outer race from the knuckle assembly.
    1. Lay the hub assembly (A) upon a suitable adapter (B).
    2.  
    3. Lay a suitable adapter (C) upon the hub bearing outer race.
    4.  
    5. Remove the hub bearing outer race from the steering knuckle assembly by using a press.

  31. Replace hub bearing with a new one.

To install:

  1. Preparation for installation:
    1. Check the hub for cracks and the splines for wear.
    2.  
    3. Check the brake disc for scoring and damage.
    4.  
    5. Check the steering knuckle for cracks.
    6.  
    7. Check the bearing for cracks or damage.
    8.

  3. Install the hub bearing to the knuckle assembly.
    1. Lay the knuckle assembly on a press.
    2.  
    3. Lay a new hub bearing upon the steering knuckle assembly.
    4.  
    5. Lay a suitable adapter upon the hub bearing.
    6.  
    7. Install the hub bearing to the steering knuckle assembly by using a press.
      WARNING
      Do not press against the inner race of the hub bearing or damage may occur to the bearing assembly.

  5. Install the hub assembly to the knuckle assembly.
    1. Lay the hub assembly (A) upon a suitable adapter (B).
    2.  
    3. Lay the knuckle assembly (C) upon the hub assembly (A).
    4.  
    5. Lay a suitable adapter (D) upon the hub bearing.
    6.  
    7. Install the hub assembly (A) to the knuckle assembly (C) by using a press.

  7. Install the snap ring (A).
  8.  
  9. Install the hub and knuckle assembly to the halfshaft.
  10.  
  11. Install the knuckle to the strut assembly and tighten the mounting bolts and nuts. Tightening torque: 101-116 ft. lbs. (137-157 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Install the brake disc to the front hub assembly, and tighten the screws.
  14.  
  15. Install the tie rod end ball joint to the knuckle.
  16.  
  17. Install the nut and split pin. Tightening torque: 17-25 ft. lbs. (24-33 Nm).
  18.  
  19. Install the ball joint assembly mounting bolt to the steering knuckle. Tightening torque: 72-87 ft. lbs. (98-118 Nm).
  20.  
  21. Install the washer, the castle nut, and split pin to the front hub assembly. Tightening torque: 145-203 ft. lbs. (196-275 Nm).
    NOTE
    The washer should be assembled with the convex surface outward when installing the castle nut and split pin.

  23. Install the brake caliper and then tighten the mounting bolts. Tightening torque: 58-72 ft. lbs. (79-98 Nm).

  25. Install the wheel speed sensor to the steering knuckle. Tightening torque: 61-86 inch lbs. (7-10 Nm).
  26.  
  27. Install the wheel and the tire to the front hub. Tightening torque: 65-80 ft. lbs. (88-108 Nm).
    WARNING
    Be careful not to damage the hub bolts when installing the front wheel and tire.
