  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Record the radio anti-theft code data.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  6.  
  7. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  8.  
  9. Drain the power steering fluid.
  10.  
  11. Remove the front tires.
  12.  
  13. Remove the bolt connecting the steering column to the universal joint.
  14.  
  15. Disconnect the pressure line from the power steering oil pump. Disconnect the return hose.
  16.  
  17. Loosen the split pin and the castle nut, and remove the tie rod end from the steering knuckle using tool SST (09568-4A000).
  18.  
  19. Remove the split pin and lower arm bolts and nut.
  20.  
  21. Disconnect the stabilizer control link from the strut assembly. Repeat on the other side of the vehicle.

  23. Remove the front and rear roll stopper bolts and nuts.
  24.  
  25. Remove the subframe retaining bolts and nuts.
  26.  
  27. Remove the rear roll stopper from the subframe.
  28.  
  29. Disconnect the pressure line and the return line from the steering gear valve body housing.
  30.  
  31. Remove the steering gear assembly from the subframe, after removing the retaining bolts.

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  2.  
  3. Torque the steering gear to subframe mounting bolts to 65-80 ft. lbs. (90-110 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Torque the split pin and lower arm bolt and nut to 65-87 ft. lbs. (90-110 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Torque the bolt connecting the steering column to the universal joint to 108-156 inch lbs. (13-18 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Fill the power steering pump with the proper grade and type of fluid.
  10.  
  11. To bleed the system of air:
    1. Remove the fuel pump fuse.
    2.  
    3. Start the engine and allow it to stall.
    4.  
    5. While operating the starting motor intermittently (not more than 15 seconds at a time), turn the steering wheel all the way to the left and then all the way to the right. Repeat the procedure 5-6 times. Do not hold the steering wheel in the full turn position for more than 10 seconds.
    6.  
    7. Check the fluid level to be sure it does not fall below the lower position on the filter.
      NOTE
      Be sure to follow the procedure outlined for bleeding the system of air. If bleeding is done at engine idle, air will be broken up and absorbed into the fluid.

  13. Check the wheel alignment. Adjust as needed.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Front wheels
     
    Outer tie rod ends
     
    Steering column flexible coupler
     
    Power steering fluid hoses, if equipped with power steering
     
    Sub-frame center beam
     
    Exhaust front pipe
     
    Left lower control arm
     
    Stabilizer bar
     
    Steering gear

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Steering gear and torque the bolts to 44-59 ft. lbs. (60-80 Nm)
     
    Stabilizer bar
     
    Left lower control arm
     
    Exhaust front pipe
     
    Sub-frame center beam
     
    Power steering fluid hoses, if equipped with power steering
     
    Steering column flexible coupler and torque the bolt to 11-14 ft. lbs. (15-19 Nm)
     
    Outer tie rod ends and torque the nuts to 17-25 ft. lbs. (23-34 Nm)
     
    Front wheels
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  2.  
  3. Fill the power steering system.
  4.  
  5. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  6.
