These vehicles have a self-adjusting mechanism in the rear drum brake assembly.

Removal & Installation

CAUTION
Frequent inhalation of brake pad dust, regardless of material composition, could be hazardous to your health. Avoid breathing dust particles. Never use an air hose or brush to clean brake assemblies.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Check to ensure that the park brake is fully released.
  4.  
  5. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  6.  
  7. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
  8.  
  9. Remove the brake drum.
  10.  
  11. Remove the shoe hold spring and shoe hold pin (B).
  12.  
  13. Remove the upper return spring (A).

  15. Lower the brake shoe assembly (A), and remove the lower return spring (B). Make sure not to damage the dust cover on the wheel cylinder.

  17. Remove the parking brake cable (A) from the brake assembly.
  18.  
  19. Remove the brake shoe assembly.

To install:

  1. Connect the parking brake cable (A) to the brake assembly.
  2.  
  3. Clean the threaded portions of adjuster sleeve and push rod female. Coat the threads of the adjuster assembly with grease. To shorten the clevises, turn the adjuster bolt.
  4.  
  5. Hook the shoe adjuster lever, then install it to the brake shoe.
  6.  
  7. Install the adjuster assembly and upper return spring.
    WARNING
    Be careful not to damage the wheel cylinder dust covers.

  8.  
  9. Install the lower return spring.
  10.  
  11. Apply brake cylinder grease, or equivalent rubber grease, to the sliding surfaces and brake shoe ends and opposite edges of the shoes.
    NOTE
    Be careful not to get grease on the brake linings.

  12.  
  13. Install the brake shoes onto the backing plate.
  14.  
  15. Install the shoe hole down pins and the shoe hole down springs.
  16.  
  17. Install the rear brake drum.
  18.  
  19. Install the tire and wheel assembly.
  20.  
  21. Depress the brake pedal several times to set the self-adjusting brake.
  22.  
  23. Adjust the parking brake, as necessary.
