REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



1468cc, 1495cc, 1596cc, 1796cc and 1997cc Engines

See Figures 1, 2, 3 and 4

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Raise the vehicle and support it safely.
  2.  
  3. Drain the oil.
  4.  
  5. Remove the underbody splash shield.
  6.  
  7. Remove the oil pan bolts, drop the pan and slide it out from under the vehicle.
  8.  
  9. Clean the mating surfaces of the oil pan and the engine block.
  10.  
  11. Apply a 1 / 8 in. (3mm) bead of RTV sealer along the groove in the oil pan.
  12.  

To install:
  1. Using non-hardening sealer, glue a new gasket to the oil pan.
  2.  
  3. Install the oil pan. Hand tighten the retaining bolts.
  4.  
  5. Starting at one end of the pan, gradually tighten the retaining bolts to 6-11 ft. lbs. (7-15 Nm), in a crisscross pattern.
  6.  
  7. Lower the engine and tighten the mount retaining nuts.
  8.  
  9. Install the oil pan drain plug.
  10.  
  11. Install the splash shield and lower the vehicle.
  12.  
  13. Refill the crankcase with oil. Start the engine and check for leaks.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Raise the vehicle and support it safely.
  2.  
  3. Drain the oil.
  4.  
  5. Remove the underbody splash shield.
  6.  
  7. Remove the oil pan bolts, drop the pan and slide it out from under the vehicle.
  8.  
  9. Clean the mating surfaces of the oil pan and the engine block.
  10.  

To install:
  1. Apply sealer to the engine block at the block-to-chain case and block-to-rear oil seal case joint faces.
  2.  
  3. Use a non-hardening sealer and secure a new gasket to the oil pan.
  4.  
  5. Install the oil pan. Hand-tighten the retaining bolts.
  6.  
  7. Starting at one end of the pan, tighten the pan bolts to 48-72 inch lbs. in a crisscross pattern.
  8.  
  9. Install the oil pan drain plug.
  10.  
  11. Install the splash shield and lower the vehicle.
  12.  
  13. Fill the crankcase with the proper amount of oil. Connect the negative battery cable. Start the engine and check for leaks.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Raise the vehicle and support safely.
  4.  
  5. Remove the torque converter bolt access cover.
  6.  
  7. Drain the engine oil.
  8.  
  9. Remove the oil pan retaining screws and remove the oil pan and gasket.
  10.  

To install:
  1. Thoroughly clean and dry all sealing surfaces, bolts and bolt holes.
  2.  
  3. Apply silicone sealer to the chain cover to block mating seam and the rear main seal retainer to block seam, if equipped.
  4.  
  5. Install a new pan gasket or apply silicone sealer to the sealing surface of the pan and install to the engine.
  6.  
  7. Install the retaining screws and torque to 50 inch lbs. (6 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the torque converter bolt access cover, if equipped. Lower the vehicle.
  10.  
  11. Install the dipstick. Fill the engine with the proper amount of oil.
  12.  
  13. Connect the negative battery cable and check for leaks.
  14.
