REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

See Figure 1

1986-89 Excel

The radio head unit is retained by spring clips that use special hooked tools to release them. The removal tools are U-shaped, with a small 90 degree bend on each end. These tools can easily be fabricated by bending a heavy gauge paper clip into a U-shape and bending each end approximately 1/8 inch at a 90 degree angle. The tools are then inserted (2 required, one for each side) into the small holes at the side of the radio face plate and the radio can then be pulled out.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.
  3. Remove the radio head unit surround trim by prying it off.
  4.
  5. Insert the special removal tools into each side of the radio and pull the radio forward.
  6.
  7. Disconnect the electrical leads from the radio. Disconnect the antenna wire.
  8.
  9. To install the radio, plug in the connectors and antenna, and slide the radio into place until it latches.
  10.
  11. Connect the negative battery cable and check the operation of the radio.
