INSPECTION



See Figure 1

Raise the vehicle and support it safely. Disconnect the ball joint at the lower end of the strut. Install the nut back onto the ball stud. Then, with an inch lbs. torque wrench, measure the torque required to start the ball joint rotating. The figures are 1.4-7.0 ft. lbs. (2.0-9.5 Nm). If the figures are within specification, the ball joint is satisfactory. If the figure is too high, the joint should be replaced. If the figure is too low, reuse the joint, provided its rotation is smooth and even. If there is roughness or play, it must be replaced. Inspect the dust cover for cracks and check all bolts for straightness and replace any damaged components.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

Excel and Scoupe
  1. Raise the vehicle and support it safely.
  2.  
  3. Unbolt the ball joint from the control arm.
  4.  
  5. Remove the stud retaining nut.
  6.  
  7. Use a ball joint removing tool and separate the ball joint from the steering knuckle.
  8.  
  9. Replace the ball joint and tighten the ball joint to control arm nut to 69-87 ft. lbs. (99-118 Nm). Torque the ball joint stud nut 43-52 ft. lbs. (59-71 Nm).

Elantra
  1. Raise the vehicle and support it safely.
  2.  
  3. Unbolt the ball joint from the control arm and using the special tool 09568-31000 or equivalent, disconnect the lower arm ball joint from the control arm.
  4.  
  5. Remove the stabilizer bar link self-locking nut and detach the stabilizer bar from the lower control arm.
  6.  
  7. Remove the ball joint mounting bolts and remove the joint from the arm.
  8.  
  9. Remove the dust cover from the ball joint.
  10.  

To install:
  1. Park the specified grease in the new dust cover and press the cover to the ball joint using cup driver tool 09545-21100 or equivalent.
  2.  
  3. Install the joint to the lower arm. Tighten the ball joint mounting bolts.
  4.  
  5. Connect the ball joint to the steering knuckle and tighten the nut to 52 ft. lbs. (72 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Connect the stabilizer bar to the lower control arm and tighten the bar link self-locking nut to 40 ft. lbs. (55 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the tire and wheel assembly to the vehicle.

  1. Raise the vehicle and support it safely. Remove the tire and wheel assemblies.
  2.  
  3. Remove the lower control arm from the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the ball joint dust cover. Using a special tool, press the ball joint from the control arm.
  6.  

To install:
  1. Apply grease to the lip of the control arm and to the ball joint contact surfaces.
  2.  
  3. Place the ball joint in the control arm. Using a special tool, press the ball joint into the control arm. The ball joint must be pressed evenly into the control arm.
  4.  
  5. Install a new dust cover on the ball joint. Install the control arm assembly into the vehicle. Torque the ball joint-to-steering knuckle retaining nut to 52 ft. lbs. (71 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the wheel and tire assembly. Lower the vehicle.
  8.
