TESTING



The blower motor can be tested by connecting it to the battery positive and negative terminals. It should run smoothly in both directions, this can be checked by reversing the wires on the battery. If the motor runs unevenly or fails to run, it should be replaced.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



1986-89 Excel

  1. Disconnect the battery ground cable.
  2.  
  3. Set the heater control to HOT and drain the cooling system.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the coolant hoses at the heater core tubes, in the engine compartment.
  6.  
  7. Remove the lower instrument panel section.
  8.  
  9. Remove the center console and on-board computer.
  10.  
  11. Loosen the heater duct mounting screw.
  12.  
  13. Pushing downward and pulling, remove the heater ducts.
  14.  
  15. Disconnect the heater control cable.
  16.  
  17. Disconnect the wiring at the motor.
  18.  
  19. Remove the five heater case mounting bolts and remove the heater case from under the dash.
  20.  
  21. Separate the case halves and remove the blower motor, blower wheel and gasket. Discard the gasket and purchase a new one. Inspect the blower wheel for damage and replace it as necessary.
  22.  

To install:
  1. Install the blower assembly with a new gasket.
  2.  
  3. Put the upper and lower case halves together using new gaskets and sealant as required.
  4.  
  5. Position the heater case under the dash and secure it with the five retaining bolts.
  6.  
  7. Connect the blower motor wiring.
  8.  
  9. Connect the heater control wire.
  10.  
  11. Install the heater ducts and secure with mounting screw.
  12.  
  13. Install the center console and computer assembly.
  14.  
  15. Install the lower instrument panel section.
  16.  
  17. Working from the engine compartment, connect the coolant hoses to the heater core tubes.
  18.  
  19. Fill the cooling system to the proper level with a 50% mix of anti-freeze.
  20.  
  21. Connect the negative battery cable.
  22.  

1990-93 Excel, Elantra and Scoupe

The blower unit is located on the passenger's side of the vehicle to the right of the heater control panel.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the glove box housing cover.
  4.  
  5. Remove the lower crash pad, crash pad center fascia and lower crash pad center skin.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the blower motor and blower resistor connectors.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the blower motor cooling tube.
  10.  
  11. Remove the three screws that attach the blower motor to the lower case and lower the blower motor far enough so that the FRESH/ RECIRC vacuum connector can be disconnected. Remove the blower motor from the car.
  12.  
  13. Inspect the blower wheel for damage and replace it as necessary. Replace the blower motor mounting seal.
  14.  
  15. Raise the blower motor and seal up onto the lower case half and connect the FRESH/ RECIRC vacuum connector. Mount the blower onto the lower case half and install the three retaining screws.
  16.  
  17. Connect the blower motor cooling tube.
  18.  
  19. Connect the blower motor and resistor wire connectors.
  20.  
  21. Install the lower crash pad center skin, crash pad center fascia and lower crash pad.
  22.  
  23. Install the glove box housing cover.
  24.  
  25. Connect the negative battery cable.
  26.  
  27. Check the blower for proper operation at all speeds.
  28.  

Sonata

The heater core hoses use spring-lock type couplings that require the uses of special coupling tool 09977-33600 (A/B) to disconnect and connect. Spring lock coupling REMOVAL & INSTALLATION is detailed in General Information & Maintenance .

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable and drain the coolant from the radiator.
  2.  
  3. From inside the engine compartment, disconnect the heater hoses and evaporator drain hose from the heater core tubes using the spring lock coupling tool described in General Information & Maintenance . Disconnect the drain hose. These three hoses are located just above the fuel filter.
  4.  
  5. Remove the front and rear console assemblies.
  6.  
  7. Remove the left and right side covers by removing the two retaining screws on each side.
  8.  
  9. Remove the glove box, center crash pad cover, center crash pad and cassette assembly.
  10.  
  11. Remove the lower crash pad.
  12.  
  13. Remove the console and center support mounting brackets.
  14.  
  15. Disconnect the rear passenger heating duct assembly and rear heating duct Y-joint from the heater case.
  16.  
  17. Remove the heater control assembly from the dash by removing the four retaining screws.
  18.  
  19. Disconnect the blower motor wiring connector.
  20.  
  21. Remove the four retaining screws and pull the heater case down and out of the dash.
  22.  
  23. Separate the case halves and remove the blower motor, blower wheel and gasket from the lower case half. Discard the gasket. Inspect the blower wheel for damage and replace it as necessary.

To install:
  1. Install the blower assembly into the lower heater case half with a new gasket.
  2.  
  3. Assemble the upper and lower case halves together using new gaskets and sealant as required.
  4.  
  5. Position the heater case under the dash and secure it with the four retaining screws.
  6.  
  7. Connect the blower motor wiring.
  8.  
  9. Install the heater control assembly into the dash and secure it with the four retaining screws.
  10.  
  11. Connect the rear heating Y-joint and left and right rear passenger heating ducts to the heater case openings.
  12.  
  13. Install the center and console support mounting brackets.
  14.  
  15. Install the lower crash pad.
  16.  
  17. Install the cassette assembly, center crash pad and cover and the glove box.
  18.  
  19. Install the left and right side covers.
  20.  
  21. Install the front and rear console assembly.
  22.  
  23. Connect the drain hose. Connect the hoses to the heater core tubes using the proper tool (see General Information & Maintenance ).
  24.  
  25. Fill the cooling system to the proper level with a 50% mix of anti-freeze and connect the negative battery cable. Start the engine and check for coolant leaks.
