REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



1986-89 Excel

See Figure 1

  1. Remove the steering wheel.

  1. Remove the steering column shroud.
  2.  
  3. Remove the glove box.
  4.  
  5. Remove the steering column undercover.
  6.  
  7. Remove the lower instrument panel cover.
  8.  
  9. Unbolt the hood release handle mounting screws.
  10.  
  11. Unbolt the lower side dash pad and disconnect the wiring connector. Remove the main and supplemental consoles.
  12.  
  13. Remove the ashtray and lighter.
  14.  
  15. Unbolt and remove the main lower dash pad and unplug the wiring connector.
  16.  
  17. Remove the cluster housing, disconnecting the wiring and removing the cluster lamp.
  18.  
  19. Remove the cluster assembly.
  20.  
  21. Remove the radio.
  22.  
  23. Remove the heater control head.
  24.  
  25. Remove the bolts securing the main dash pad to the heater bracket.
  26.  
  27. Remove the upper dash pad cover and remove the main dash pad screws from underneath.
  28.  
  29. Remove the main crash pad.
  30.  

To install:
  1. Install the main dash pad and from underneath, install the main dash pad screws.
  2.  
  3. Install the upper dash pad cover.
  4.  
  5. Install the main dash pad-to-heater bracket bolts.
  6.  
  7. Install the heater control head.
  8.  
  9. Install the radio.
  10.  
  11. Install the cluster assembly.
  12.  
  13. Install the cluster housing with wiring and lamp.
  14.  
  15. Plug the wiring connector into the main dash pad and install the main dash pad.
  16.  
  17. Install the ashtray and lighter.
  18.  
  19. Plug the wiring connector into the lower dash pad and install the lower dash pad.
  20.  
  21. Install the hood release handle.
  22.  
  23. Install the lower instrument cover. On 1988-89 models, install the main and supplemental consoles.
  24.  
  25. Remove the steering column undercover.
  26.  
  27. Install the glove box.
  28.  
  29. Install the steering wheel column shroud.
  30.  
  31. Install the steering wheel.
  32.  
  33. Check all instrument panel functions to make sure they work properly.
  34.  

1990-93 Excel, Scoupe and Elantra

  1. Remove the steering wheel.
  2.  
  3. Remove the upper and lower steering column shrouds.
  4.  
  5. Remove the hood release handle mounting screws.
  6.  
  7. Remove the lower fascia panel.
  8.  
  9. Remove the side lower crash pad.
  10.  
  11. Remove the glove box.
  12.  
  13. Remove the main lower crash pad.
  14.  
  15. Pull the instrument cluster forward disconnect all the electrical wiring and the speedometer cable.
  16.  
  17. Remove the heater control assembly.
  18.  
  19. Remove the front speaker grille from the main crash pad.
  20.  
  21. Remove the front speaker.
  22.  
  23. Remove the six retaining screws and remove the main crash pad from it's mounting brackets.
  24.  

To install:
  1. Position the main crash pad onto the mounting brackets and install and tighten the six retaining screws.
  2.  
  3. Install the front speaker.
  4.  
  5. Install the front speaker grille into the main crash pad.
  6.  
  7. Install the heater control assembly.
  8.  
  9. Connect the speedometer cable and the electrical wiring to the rear of the instrument cluster and install the cluster not the main crash pad.
  10.  
  11. Install the lower main crash pad.
  12.  
  13. Install the glove box.
  14.  
  15. Install the side lower crash pad.
  16.  
  17. Install the lower fascia panel.
  18.  
  19. Install the hood release handle screws.
  20.  
  21. Install the steering wheel column shrouds.
  22.  
  23. Install the steering wheel.
  24.  
  25. Check all instrument panel functions to make sure they work properly.
  26.  

Sonata

  1. Remove the steering wheel.
  2.  
  3. Remove the steering column upper and lower shrouds.
  4.  
  5. Remove the hood release handle.
  6.  
  7. Remove the side lower crash pad.
  8.  
  9. Remove the fuse box mounting screws and allow the fuse box and wiring to dangle.
  10.  
  11. Empty and remove the glove box.
  12.  
  13. Remove the lower crash pad center fascia panel.
  14.  
  15. Remove the radio and disconnect the electrical connector.
  16.  
  17. Remove the lower crash pad center skin.
  18.  
  19. Remove the main lower crash pad.
  20.  
  21. Remove the four steering column mounting bracket bolts and lower the steering column from its normal operating position.
  22.  
  23. Remove the cluster assembly and disconnect the electrical connectors.
  24.  
  25. Remove the air conditioner control assembly.
  26.  
  27. Remove the front speaker grille from the main crash pad.
  28.  
  29. Remove the front speaker.
  30.  
  31. Disconnect the defroster nozzle upper center cover from the main crash pad.
  32.  
  33. Remove the main crash pad.
  34.  

To install:
  1. Install the main crash pad.
  2.  
  3. Connect the defroster nozzle upper center cover to the main crash pad.
  4.  
  5. Install the front speaker and speaker grille into the main crash pad.
  6.  
  7. Install the air conditioner control assembly.
  8.  
  9. Connect the electrical connectors to the rear of the cluster assembly and install it.
  10.  
  11. Raise the steering wheel from the lowered position and install the four steering column mounting bracket bolts.
  12.  
  13. Install the main lower crash pad.
  14.  
  15. Connect the wiring to the radio and install.
  16.  
  17. Install the lower crash pad fascia panel.
  18.  
  19. Install the glove box.
  20.  
  21. Raise the fuse box and wiring into place and install the fuse box mounting screws.
  22.  
  23. Install the lower side crash pad.
  24.  
  25. Install the hood release handle.
  26.  
  27. Install the upper and lower steering column shrouds.
  28.  
  29. Install the steering wheel.
  30.
