REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



Excel and Scoupe
  1. Raise the vehicle and support it safely. Remove the rear wheels.
  2.  
  3. Support the rear suspension arm with a floor jack. Then, remove the lower shock absorber attaching bolt, nut and lock washer.
  4.  
  5. Slowly, lower the jack just to the point where the spring can be removed and remove the spring. If the spring is being replaced, transfer the spring seat to the new spring.
  6.  

To install:
  1. When installing the coil spring, make sure the smaller diameter is upward. Make sure the spring identification and load markings match up.
  2.  
  3. Torque the lower shock mounting nut/bolt to 47-58 ft. lbs. (64-78 Nm).
  4.  

Elantra
  1. Raise the vehicle and support it safely. Remove the wheel.
  2.  
  3. Remove the trim cover inside the rear compartment for access to the top mounting nuts.
  4.  
  5. Support the lower arm with a jack and compress the coil spring. Remove the lower mounting nut.
  6.  
  7. Remove the cap from the upper end of the shock.
  8.  
  9. Remove the upper mounting nut and the shock from the vehicle.
  10.  
  11. Compress the spring on the shock using spring compressor 09546-11000 or equivalent. Remove the piston rod tightening nut at the top of the strut while holding the piston rod with a wrench.
  12.  
  13. Disassemble the upped dust cover, bushing, pad, bracket and cup assembly taking note of positioning to assure correct installation. Remove the spring from the shock absorber.
  14.  

To install:
  1. Install the compressed spring to the shock absorber assembly and install the bump rubber, cup assembly, upper bushing, upper spring pad, collar, bracket assembly, upper bushing, washer and self-locking nut to the shock absorber in that order. Make sure the components are in the same orientation as was prior to removal.

  3. Tighten the upper rod nut to 14-22 ft. lbs. (20-30 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Remove the spring compressor tool.
  6.  
  7. Install the shock absorber to the lower arm, install the lower mounting nut and tighten to 72 ft. lbs. (100 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the upper nut and torque to 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Install the cap and cover.
  12.  
  13. Lower the arm and remove the jack.
  14.
