  1. Remove the wheel cover. Loosen the lug nuts.
  2.  
  3. Raise the vehicle and support it safely. Remove the wheel.
  4.  
  5. Remove the upper mounting bolt/nut or nut.
  6.  
  7. While holding the bottom stud mount nut with one wrench, remove the locknut with another wrench, or on some vehicles, remove the nut and bolt from the mounting bracket.
  8.  
  9. Remove the shock absorber.
  10.  
  11. Check the shock for:
    1. Excessive oil leakage, some minor weeping is permissible;
    2.  
    3. Bent center rod, damaged outer case, or other defects.
    4.  
    5. Pump the shock absorber several times, if it offers even resistance on full strokes it may be considered serviceable.
    6.

To install:
  1. Install the upper shock mounting nut and bolt. Hand-tighten the nut.
  2.  
  3. Install the bottom eye of the shock over the spring stud or into the mounting bracket and insert the bolt and nut. Tighten the nut to 47-58 ft. lbs. (64-78 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Tighten the upper fasteners to 47-58 ft. lbs. (64-78 Nm).

  1. Raise the vehicle and support it safely. Remove the wheel.
  2.  
  3. Remove the trim cover inside the rear compartment for access to the top mounting nuts.
  4.  
  5. Support the lower arm with a jack and compress the coil spring. Remove the lower mounting nut.
  6.  
  7. Remove the cap from the upper end of the shock.
  8.  
  9. Remove the upper mounting nut and the shock from the vehicle.
  10.  
  11. Install the shock absorber to the lower arm, install the lower nut and tighten to 72 ft. lbs. (100 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Install the upper nut and torque to 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Install the cap and cover.
  16.  
  17. Lower the arm and remove the jack.

Sonata

  1. Raise the vehicle and support it safely. Allow the lower arms and suspension to hang. Remove the wheels.
  2.  
  3. Place a block of wood on a floor jack and position the jack under the axle beam. Raise the axle slightly to relax the strut and to support the axle when the strut is removed. Position an additional support under the axle.
  4.  
  5. Take care in jacking that no contact is made on the lateral rod.
  6.  
  7. Remove the upper dust cover cap from the strut assembly.
  8.  
  9. Remove the upper mounting nuts. Remove the lower mounting bolt and nut.
  10.  
  11. Remove the strut.
  12.  

To install:
  1. Installation is the reverse order of the removal procedures. Torque the lower mounting bolt and nut to 58-72 ft. lbs. (79-96 Nm); The upper mounting nuts to 18-25 ft. lbs. (25-34 Nm).
