the supplemental restrain system (SRS) is designed to supplement the seat belt to help reduce the risk or severity of injury to the driver and passenger by activating and deploying driver and front passenger side air bags in certain frontal collisions.
The SRS (Air Bag) consists of a driver side air bag module located in the center of the steering wheel, a passenger side air bag module located in the passenger side crash pad, a control module located on the floor panel below the heater unit, an accelerometer, a service reminder lamp located on the dash, a clock spring interconnection located within the steering column, a knee bolster located under the steering column and associated wiring and connectors.
Deployment of the air bas is designed to occur in frontal or near frontal impacts of moderate or severe force. Only authorized service personnel should work on or around SRS components. Extreme care must be used when servicing components to avoid personal injury.
See Figure 1
DISARMING THE SYSTEM
The air bag system is disarmed by disconnecting the negative battery cable and waiting at lease 30 seconds.
ARMING THE SYSTEM
The air bag system is armed when all appropriate system harnesses and the battery are connected.
