The easiest way to test the performance of the alternator is to perform a regulated voltage test.

  1. Start the engine and allow it to reach operating temperature.
  2.  
  3. Connect a voltmeter between the positive and negative terminals of the battery.
  4.  
  5. Voltage should be as specified in the chart.
  6.  
  7. If voltage is higher or lower than specification, a problem exists in the alternator or voltage regulator.
  8.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Loosen the alternator mounting bolts and turn the adjusting screw to relieve the belt tension.
  4.  
  5. Remove the drive belt from the alternator pulley.
  6.  
  7. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  8.  
  9. Remove the mud guard from under the engine.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the B+ terminal wire and the electrical harness from the alternator.
  12.  
  13. Support the alternator by hand and remove the mounting bolts.
  14.  
  15. Remove the alternator from the engine compartment.
  16.  

To install:
  1. Position the alternator and install the mounting bolts.
  2.  
  3. Connect the B+ wire and the electrical harness to the alternator terminal. Make sure the wire nut is tight and the protective cap is firmly placed over the wire connection.
  4.  
  5. Install the left side mud guard.
  6.  
  7. Lower the vehicle.
  8.  
  9. Install and properly tension the drive belt.
  10.  
  11. Tighten the alternator support belt to 14-18 ft. lbs. (20-25 Nm) and the adjusting lock bolt to 9-11 ft. lbs. (12-15 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Connect the negative battery cable.
  14.  
  15. Start the engine and check the charging system for proper operation.
  16.  

Sonata and 1994-95 Elantra

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the radiator attaching bolts.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the coolant reserve hose and the fan motor electrical harness.
  6.  
  7. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  8.  
  9. Remove the mud guard under the engine.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the oil pressure switch electrical harness.
  12.  
  13. Loosen the belt tensioner and remove the accessory drive belt.
  14.  
  15. Disconnect the B+ terminal wire and the electrical harness from the alternator.
  16.  
  17. While lifting up on the radiator, remove the alternator from the vehicle.
  18.  

To install:
  1. While lifting the radiator, position the alternator on the engine mounting fixture.
  2.  
  3. Install the lower mounting bolt and nut. Tighten the nut just enough to allow for movement of the alternator.
  4.  
  5. Lower the radiator.
  6.  
  7. Connect the B+ wire and the electrical harness to the alternator terminal. Make sure the wire nut is tight and the protective cap is firmly placed over the wire connection.
  8.  
  9. Install and properly tension the drive belt.
  10.  
  11. Tighten the alternator support bolt to 14-18 ft. lbs. (20-25 Nm) and the adjusting lock bolt to 9-11 ft. lbs. (12-15 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Connect the oil pressure switch electrical harness.
  14.  
  15. Install the mud guard under the engine.
  16.  
  17. Lower the vehicle.
  18.  
  19. Connect the coolant reserve hose, oil pressure switch and the fan motor electrical harnesses.
  20.  
  21. Connect the negative battery cable.
  22.  
  23. Start the engine and check the charging system for proper operation.

Accent

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the radiator attaching bolts.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the radiator and condenser fan motor electrical harnesses.
  6.  
  7. Loosen the belt tensioner and remove the accessory drive belt.
  8.  
  9. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the B+ terminal wire and the electrical harness from the alternator.
  12.  
  13. While lifting up on the radiator, remove the alternator from the vehicle.
  14.  

To install:
  1. While lifting the radiator, position the alternator on the engine mounting fixture.
  2.  
  3. Install the lower mounting bolt and nut. Tighten the nut just enough to allow for movement of the alternator.
  4.  
  5. Lower the radiator.
  6.  
  7. Connect the B+ wire and the electrical harness to the alternator terminal. Make sure the wire nut is tight and the protective cap is firmly placed over the wire connection.
  8.  
  9. Install and properly tension the drive belt.
  10.  
  11. Tighten the alternator support bolt to 14-18 ft. lbs. (20-25 Nm) and the adjusting lock bolt to 9-11 ft. lbs. (12-15 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Lower the vehicle.
  14.  
  15. Connect the radiator and condenser fan motor electrical harnesses.
  16.  
  17. Connect the negative battery cable.
  18.  
  19. Install the radiator attaching bolts.
  20.  
  21. Start the engine and check the charging system for proper operation.

Sonata V6

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the distributor cap and power steering pressure hose nut.
  4.  
  5. Loosen the belt tensioner and remove the accessory drive belt.
  6.  
  7. Remove the timing belt cover cap and timing belt upper cover.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the B+ terminal wire and the electrical harness from the alternator.
  10.  
  11. Remove the alternator from the engine.
  12.  

To install:
  1. Position the alternator on the engine mounting fixture.
  2.  
  3. Install the lower mounting bolt and nut. Tighten the nut just enough to allow for movement of the alternator.
  4.  
  5. Install and properly tension the drive belt.
  6.  
  7. Tighten the alternator support bolt to 14-18 ft. lbs. (20-25 Nm) and the adjusting lock bolt to 9-11 ft. lbs. (12-15 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Connect the B+ terminal wire and the electrical harness to the alternator.
  10.  
  11. Install the timing belt cover cap and timing belt upper cover.
  12.  
  13. Install the power steering pressure hose nut and distributor cap.
  14.  
  15. Connect the battery cable.
  16.  
  17. Start the engine and check the charging system for proper operation.
  18.  
  19. Check and adjust the power steering fluid level, as necessary.
