Throttle Position Sensor (TPS)

Print

OPERATION

The TPS is a rotating type variable resistor that rotates with the throttle body shaft to sense the throttle valve opening. Based on TPS voltage signals, the ECM computes the throttle valve opening and accordingly corrects fuel for engine acceleration. The TPS is located on the throttle body, attached to the throttle shaft.

Early Model Engines
  1. Backprobe the sensor electrical harness with the ignition ON .
  2.
  3. Measure voltage between sensor terminals 1 and 3.
  4.
  5. Voltage should be 0.45-0.55 volts with the throttle at idle position and increase steadily and smoothly to 4.5-5.5 volts with the throttle in the wide open throttle position.
  6.
  7. If voltage does not increase steadily or voltage values are not within specification, check power and ground circuits.
  8.
  9. If power and ground circuits are functional, sensor is faulty.
  10.

Late Model Engines
  1. Backprobe the sensor electrical harness with the ignition ON .
  2.
  3. Measure voltage between sensor terminals 1 and 2.
  4.
  5. Voltage should be 0.25-0.8 volts with the throttle at idle position and increase steadily and smoothly to 4.25-4.8 volts with the throttle in the wide open throttle position.
  6.
  7. If voltage does not increase steadily or voltage values are not within specification, check power and ground circuits.
  8.
  9. If power and ground circuits are functional, sensor is faulty.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.
  3. Label and disconnect the sensor electrical harness
  4.
  5. Loosen sensor mounting bolts.
  6.
  7. Carefully remove the sensor.
  8.

To Install:
  1. Carefully install the sensor and tighten mounting bolts to 1-2 ft. lbs. (1.5-2.5 Nm).
  2.

If sensor mounting bolts have slots for adjustment, connect a voltmeter and adjust sensor to proper idle position voltage.

  1. Connect the sensor electrical harness
  2.
  3. Connect the negative battery cable.
  4.
