Steering Knuckle

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



  1. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  2.  
  3. Remove the front wheels.
  4.  
  5. Remove the caliper and suspend it out of the way without disconnecting the brake hose.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the lower ball joint from the knuckle.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the tie rod end from the steering knuckle.
  10.  
  11. Using a two-jawed puller, press the axle shaft from the hub.
  12.  
  13. Unbolt the strut from the knuckle.
  14.  
  15. Remove the knuckle assembly.
  16.  

To install:

Perform final tightening of all components when the vehicle is on the ground at proper ride height.

  1. Install the knuckle assembly and tighten bolts as follows:

    Strut-to-knuckle bolts-65-76 ft. lbs. (95-105 Nm) for Accent, Excel, Scoupe and Sonata.
     
    Strut-to-knuckle bolts-80-94 ft. lbs. (110-130 Nm) for Elantra and Tiburon.
     
    Ball joint nut-43-52 ft. lbs. (60-72 Nm).
     
    Tie rod end-11-25 ft. lbs. (15-34 Nm).
     

  2.  
  3. Install the axle shaft into the hub.
  4.  
  5. Install the axle shaft nut and tighten as follows:

    145-188 ft. lbs. (200-260 Nm) for Excel, Scoupe, Sonata and 1994-95 Elantra
     
    130-159 ft. lbs. (180-220 Nm) for Accent, Tiburon and 1996-98 Elantra
     

  6.  
  7. Install the brake caliper.
  8.  
  9. Install the front wheels
  10.  
  11. Lower the vehicle
  12.
