With Rear Hub Bearing
  1. Raise the vehicle and support safely.
  2.  
  3. Remove the wheels.
  4.  
  5. Remove the dust cap, cotter pin and loosen the locknut
  6.  
  7. Remove the washer and outer wheel bearing.
  8.  

If the drum is difficult to remove, remove the plug from the rear of the backing plate and push the self adjuster lever away from the star wheel. Rotate the star wheel to retract the shoes.

  1. Remove the drum with the inner wheel bearing from the spindle.
  2.  

To install:
  1. Install the drum on the spindle.
  2.  
  3. Install the outer wheel bearing and washer.
  4.  
  5. Tighten the locknut to 108-145 ft. lbs. (150-200 Nm). Turn the brake drum while tightening the spindle nut to seat the wheel bearings.
  6.  
  7. Install the cotter pin and dust cap.
  8.  
  9. Install the wheels
  10.  
  11. Adjust the rear brakes.
  12.  

Without Rear Hub Bearing
  1. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  2.  
  3. Remove the wheels.
  4.  

If the drum is difficult to remove, remove the plug from the rear of the backing plate and push the self adjuster lever away from the star wheel. Rotate the star wheel to retract the shoes.

  1. Remove the drum set screw, as required.
  2.  
  3. Remove the drum.
  4.  

To install:
  1. Install the drum and tighten the set screw securely.
  2.  
  3. Install the wheels.
  4.  
  5. Adjust the brake shoes.
  6.  
  7. Lower the vehicle.
  8.

  1. Raise the rear end and remove the brake drum as previously described.
  2.  
  3. Thoroughly clean the drum with brake cleaning solvent and allow the drum to dry.
  4.  
  5. Measure the brake drum inside diameter with a outside Vernier caliper. The manufacturer's minimum allowable service specifications are as follows; Excel - 182 mm and Sonata - 230 mm.
  6.  
  7. Using a dial indicator, measure the brake drum for out-of-roundness. Maximum brake drum out-of-round for all vehicles is 0.15 mm.
  8.  
  9. Check the brake linings for proper lining to drum contact.
  10.
