REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



Excel and Scoupe
SPLIT SUSPENSION

  1. Raise the vehicle and support it safely.
  2.  
  3. Remove the rear wheels.
  4.  
  5. Remove the brake assembly.
  6.  
  7. Remove the muffler assembly.
  8.  
  9. Raise and support the suspension arm.
  10.  
  11. Remove the shock absorber.
  12.  
  13. Lower the suspension slightly and carefully remove the coil spring.
  14.  
  15. Disconnect the brake hose at the suspension arm.
  16.  
  17. Remove the rear suspension from the vehicle as an assembly.
  18.  

To install:
  1. Install the rear suspension as an assembly.
  2.  
  3. Connect the brake hose at the suspension arm.
  4.  
  5. Install the coil spring and raise the suspension arm.
  6.  
  7. Install the shock absorber.
  8.  
  9. Install the muffler assembly.
  10.  
  11. Install the brake assembly.
  12.  
  13. Install the rear wheels.
  14.  
  15. Lower the vehicle.
  16.  
  17. Once the vehicle is at ride height, tighten the suspension arm-to-body nuts to 94-108 ft. lbs. (130-150 Nm) and the shock absorber bolts to 47-58 ft. lbs. (65-80 Nm).

1994-95 Elantra
TORSION AXLE

  1. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  2.  
  3. Support the rear torsion axle.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the lateral rod assembly and tie to the axle beam using wire.
  6.  
  7. Remove the brake assemblies.
  8.  
  9. Using a floor jack, slightly raise and support the rear torsion axle.
  10.  
  11. Remove the shock absorber lower mounting bolt.
  12.  
  13. Lower the arm enough to separate the shock from axle.
  14.  
  15. Remove the trailing arm mounting bolts and lower the arm from the vehicle.
  16.  

To install:
  1. Raise the axle into position and install the trailing arm mounting bolts hand tight.
  2.  
  3. Raise the axle and connect the shock absorber.
  4.  
  5. Install the brake assemblies.
  6.  
  7. Connect the lateral rod assembly.
  8.  
  9. Lower the vehicle.
  10.  
  11. With the vehicle at ride height, tighten the trailing arm bolts to 94-108 ft. lbs. (130-150 Nm), the lower shock mount bolts and lateral rod bolts to 58-72 ft. lbs. (80-100 Nm).

Lateral Rod

See Figure 2

  1. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the rod at each end and remove it from the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Install the lateral rod and tighten bolts hand tight.
  6.  
  7. Lower the vehicle.
  8.  
  9. With the vehicle at ride height, tighten bolts to 58-72 ft. lbs. (78-97 Nm).

Sonata
UPPER ARM, LOWER ARM AND ASSIST LINK

  1. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  2.  
  3. Remove the rear shock absorber.
  4.  
  5. Remove the brake line from the clamp.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the ball joint and knuckle.
  8.  
  9. Remove the lower arm.
  10.  
  11. Remove the crossmember.
  12.  
  13. Remove the assist link.
  14.  
  15. Remove the upper arm.
  16.  

To Install:
  1. Install the crossmember and tighten nuts hand tight.
  2.  
  3. Install the upper arm and tighten nuts hand tight.
  4.  
  5. Install the assist link and tighten nuts hand tight.
  6.  
  7. Install the lower arm and tighten nuts hand tight.
  8.  
  9. Connect the ball joint and knuckle. Tighten ball joint nut to 54-64 ft. lbs. (75-89 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Install the brake line clamp and tighten bolt to 36-43 ft. lbs. (50-60 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Install the rear shock absorber and tighten nuts hand tight.
  14.  
  15. Lower the vehicle.
  16.  
  17. With the vehicle at normal ride height, tighten the suspension mounting bolts/nuts as follows:

    Assist link and lower arm-to-trailing arm-54-64 ft. lbs. (75-89 Nm)
     
    Assist link and lower arm-to-crossmember-102-116 ft. lbs. (140-160 Nm)
     
    Upper arm-to-crossmember-102-116 ft. lbs. (140-160 Nm)
     
    Crossmember mounting nut-58-73 ft. lbs. (80-100 Nm)

TRAILING ARM

See Figure 3

  1. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  2.  
  3. Remove the brake line from the clamp.
  4.  
  5. Remove the brake assembly.
  6.  
  7. Remove the hub assembly.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the ABS speed sensor.
  10.  
  11. Remove the brake backing plate.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect the lower arm.
  14.  
  15. Disconnect the stabilizer link.
  16.  
  17. Disconnect the upper arm.
  18.  
  19. Disconnect the assist link.
  20.  
  21. Remove the trailing arm.
  22.  

To Install:
  1. Install the trailing arm and tighten the bolts hand tight.
  2.  
  3. Connect the assist link and tighten the nuts hand tight.
  4.  
  5. Connect the upper arm and tighten the nuts hand tight.
  6.  
  7. Connect the stabilizer link and tighten the nuts hand tight.
  8.  
  9. Connect the lower arm and tighten the nuts hand tight.
  10.  
  11. Install the brake backing plate.
  12.  
  13. Connect the ABS speed sensor.
  14.  
  15. Install the hub assembly.
  16.  
  17. Install the brake assembly.
  18.  
  19. Install the brake line from the clamp.
  20.  
  21. Lower the vehicle.
  22.  
  23. With the vehicle at normal ride height, tighten the suspension mounting bolts/nuts as follows:

    Assist link and lower arm-to-trailing arm-54-64 ft. lbs. (75-89 Nm)
     
    Assist link and lower arm-to-crossmember-102-116 ft. lbs. (140-160 Nm)
     
    Upper arm-to-crossmember-102-116 ft. lbs. (140-160 Nm)
     
    Crossmember mounting nut-58-73 ft. lbs. (80-100 Nm)
     
    Trailing arm-to-chassis-102-116 ft. lbs. (140-160 Nm)

  1. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the ABS wheel sensor
  4.  
  5. Remove the brake assembly.
  6.  
  7. Remove the suspension arms and trailing arm mounting bolts from the crossmember and knuckle.
  8.  
  9. Remove the suspension arms and trailing arm from the vehicle.
  10.  

To Install:
  1. Install the suspension arms and trailing arm. Tighten mounting bolts/nuts hand tight.
  2.  
  3. Install the brake assembly.
  4.  
  5. Connect the ABS wheel sensor
  6.  
  7. Lower the vehicle.
  8.  
  9. With the vehicle at normal ride height, tighten the suspension mounting bolts/nuts as follows:

    Suspension arms (Accent)-72-87 ft. lbs. (100-120 Nm)
     
    Suspension arms (except Accent)-58-72 ft. lbs. (80-100 Nm)
     
    Trailing arm-72-87 ft. lbs. (100-120 Nm)
