Rear Wheel Bearings

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

Drum Brakes

  1. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  2.  
  3. Remove the rear wheel.
  4.  
  5. Remove the dust cap.
  6.  
  7. Loosen the spindle nut and remove the brake drum.
  8.  
  9. Remove the outer bearing from the drum.
  10.  
  11. Using a pry bar, remove the oil seal from inside the drum.
  12.  
  13. Remove the inner bearing.
  14.  
  15. Using a brass drift, remove the inner and outer bearing races.
  16.  

To Install:
  1. Using a race driver, install the inner and outer bearing races.
  2.  
  3. Lubricate and install the inner bearing.
  4.  
  5. Using a seal driver, install the oil seal on the inside of the drum.
  6.  
  7. Lubricate and install the outer bearing.
  8.  
  9. Install the brake drum and tighten the spindle nut to 108-145 ft. lbs. (150-200 Nm). Turn the brake drum while tightening the spindle nut to seat the wheel bearings.
  10.  
  11. Install the dust cap.
  12.  
  13. Install the rear wheel.
  14.  
  15. Lower the vehicle.
  16.

The rear wheel bearing is an integral part of the rear hub and is not serviceable. If the wheel bearing is defective, replace the wheel hub as an assembly.

  1. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  2.  
  3. Remove the rear wheel.
  4.  
  5. Remove the rear speed sensor on ABS equipped vehicles.
  6.  
  7. Remove the brake caliper and brake disc.
  8.  
  9. Remove the hub cap.
  10.  
  11. Loosen the spindle nut and remove the hub.
  12.  

To Install:
  1. Install the hub, washer and spindle nut.
  2.  
  3. Tighten the spindle nut while spinning the hub to the following torque:

    Tiburon-143-164 ft. lbs. (200-230 Nm)
     
    Sonata-146-189 ft. lbs. (200-260 Nm)
     
    Accent and 1996-98 Elantra-130-159 ft. lbs. (180-220 Nm)
     
    1994-95 Elantra-108-145 ft. lbs. (150-200 Nm)
     

  4.  

  1. Install the hub cap.
  2.  
  3. Install the brake caliper and brake disc.
  4.  
  5. Install and adjust the rear speed sensor on ABS equipped vehicles.
  6.  
  7. Install the rear wheel.
  8.  
  9. Lower the vehicle.
  10.
