Operation

The knock sensor is used to detect engine vibrations caused by preignition or detonation and provides information to the ECM, which then retards the timing to eliminate detonation.

Removal & Installation

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.
  3. Disconnect the sensor connector.
  4.
  5. Remove the sensor from its mounting.
  6.

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  2.
  3. Tighten the sensor to 12-18 ft. lbs.
  4.

Testing

2.4L Engine
  1. Disconnect the sensor electrical connector. Connect an ohmmeter.
  2.
  3. Measure the resistance between terminals 2 and 3. Specification should be 5mohm at 68 degrees F.
  4.
  5. If resistance is zero, replace the sensor.
  6.
  7. Measure the capacitance between terminal 2 and 3. Specification should be 800-1600 pF.
  8.
  9. If not within specification, replace the sensor.
  10.

2.7L Engine
  10.

NOTE
If the sensor is suspected of being defective, it should be replaced with a known good component for testing purposes.

  1. Check the sensor torque. It should be 12-18 ft. lbs.
  2.
  3. If the sensor is still not functioning, replace it with a known good component.
  4.
  5. Recheck the sensor.
  6.

3.5L Engine
  10.
