2.4L Engine



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the cooling system.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Water pump inlet pipe
     
    Drive belt and water pump pulley
     
    Timing belt covers
     
    Timing belt tensioner
     
    Water pump bolts
     
    Alternator brace
     
    Water pump and gasket
     

  6.  
  7. Clean the gasket mating surfaces.
  8.  

To install:

Fig. Make sure the water pump bolts are positioned in their original positions as the bolts are different lengths-2.4L engine

  1. Install or connect the following:

    New O-ring onto the groove on the front end of the coolant pipe and wet the O-ring with water
     
    Water pump and gasket
     
    Bolts and alternator bracket. Tighten the bolts to 14-20 ft. lbs. (20-27 Nm).
     
    Timing belt tensioner
     
    Timing belt covers
     
    Water pump pulley and drive belt
     
    Water pump inlet pipe
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  2.  
  3. Fill the cooling system.
  4.  
  5. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  6.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the cooling system.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Water pump inlet pipe
     
    Drive belt and water pump pulley
     
    Timing belt covers
     
    Timing belt tensioner
     
    Water pump bolts
     
    Alternator brace
     
    Water pump and gasket
     

  6.  
  7. Clean the gasket mating surfaces.
  8.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the cooling system.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Drive belt and water pump pulley
     
    Timing belt covers
     
    Timing belt tensioner
     
    Idler pulley
     
    Water pump bolts
     
    Water pump and gasket
     

  6.  
  7. Clean the gasket mating surfaces.
  8.

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Water pump and gasket
     
    Bolts and alternator bracket. Tighten the bolts to 11-16 ft. lbs. (15-22 Nm).
     
    Idler pulley
     
    Timing belt tensioner
     
    Timing belt covers
     
    Water pump pulley and drive belt
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  2.  
  3. Fill the cooling system.
  4.  
  5. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  6.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.

  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Drive belt and water pump pulley
     
    Timing belt covers

  7. Clean the gasket mating surfaces.

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Water pump and gasket
     
    Bolts and alternator bracket. Tighten the bolts to 11-16 ft. lbs. (15-22 Nm).
     
    Idler pulley
     
    Timing belt tensioner
     
    Timing belt covers
     
    Water pump pulley and drive belt
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  2.  
  3. Fill the cooling system.
  4.  
  5. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  6.  

3.5L Engine



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the cooling system.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  6.  
  7. Remove the drive belt.
  8.  
  9. Remove the timing belt covers.
  10.  
  11. Remove the timing belt tensioner.
  12.  
  13. Remove the idler pulley.
  14.  
  15. Remove the water pump bolts.
  16.  
  17. Remove the water pump and gasket.
  18.  
  19. Clean the gasket mating surfaces.
  20.  

To install:

  1. Install the water pump and gasket.
  2.  
  3. Install the bolts. Tighten the M8 bolts to 11-16 ft. lbs. (15-22 Nm) and the M10 bolt to 24-36 ft. lbs. (33-50 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the idler pulley.
  6.  
  7. Install the timing belt tensioner.
  8.  
  9. Install the timing belt covers.
  10.  
  11. Install the drive belt.
  12.  
  13. Connect the negative battery cable.
  14.  
  15. Fill the cooling system.
  16.  
  17. Start the engine and check for leaks.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.

  3. Drain the cooling system.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  6.  
  7. Remove the drive belt.
  8.  
  9. Remove the timing belt covers.
  10.  
  11. Remove the timing belt tensioner.
  12.  
  13. Remove the idler pulley.
  14.  
  15. Remove the water pump bolts.
  16.  
  17. Remove the water pump and gasket.
  18.  
  19. Clean the gasket mating surfaces.
  20.  

To install:

  1. Install the water pump and gasket.
  2.  
  3. Install the bolts. Tighten the M8 bolts to 11-16 ft. lbs. (15-22 Nm) and the M10 bolt to 24-36 ft. lbs. (33-50 Nm).

  5. Install the idler pulley.
  6.  
  7. Install the timing belt tensioner.
  8.  
  9. Install the timing belt covers.
  10.  
  11. Install the drive belt.
  12.  
  13. Connect the negative battery cable.
  14.  
  15. Fill the cooling system.
  16.  
  17. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  18.
