  3. Disconnect the breather hose and the engine harness. For additional information, refer to the engine and transaxle assembly section.
  4.
  5. Remove the timing belt. For additional information, refer to the timing belt section.
  6.
  7. Remove the spark plug cables.
  8.
  9. Loosen the cylinder head cover bolts and then remove it.
  10.
  11. Remove the camshaft sprockets.
  12.
  13. Remove the camshaft bearing caps.
  14.
  15. Remove the camshafts.
  16.
  17. Rotate the crankshaft so No. 1 cylinder is at TDC (Compression stroke)
  18.
  19. Check the position of the rocker arm whether it is exactly installed on the lash adjuster and valve or not.
  20.
  21. Install the camshaft dowel pin as illustration.
  22.
  23. The left and right banks of the camshafts are different and you should be careful not to confuse them. Identification is as follows: Left bank Intake (IN): I Exhaust (Ex): E Right bank Intake (IN): J Exhaust (Ex): H
  24.
  25. Confirm the identification mark and the number. Bearing caps of No. 3, No. 4, and No. 5 have the front mark and arrange the front mark upon the cylinder head while installing the bearing caps. Identification mark Intake: I Exhaust: E
  26.
  27. Tighten the bearing cap by 2 or 3 steps to Outer 16 EA: 14-15lb.ft (19-21Nm) and Inner 24 EA: 7.4-8.8lb.ft (10-12Nm).
  28.
  29. Install the cylinder head cover.
  30.
  31. Install the gasket to the cylinder head cover correctly.
  32.
  33. Clean sealing surface on camshaft cap.
    NOTE
Clean the sealing surface with use scraper, to prevent oil leak. Apply sealant to the sealing surface on cylinder head cover and camshaft cap.

    NOTE
Be careful of gasket escapement when installing the cylinder head cover. You must use the washer when installing the cylinder head cover bolts.

Inspection

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable

    Accessory drive belts

    Cylinder head cover

  4.
  5. Inspect cam lobes. Using a micrometer, measure the cam lobe height.
  6.
  7. Cam height: [Standard value]Intake = 44.618mm (1.7566in.)Exhaust = 44.518mm (1.7527in.)[Limit]Intake = 44.518mm (1.7527in.)Exhaust = 44.418mm (1.7487in.)
  8.
  9. If the cam lobe height is less than minimum, replace the camshaft.
  10.
  11. Inspect camshaft journal clearance.
  12.
  13. Clean the bearing caps and camshaft journals.
  14.
  15. Place the camshafts on the cylinder head.
  16.
  17. Lay a strip of plastigage across each of the camshaft journal.
  18.
  19. Install the bearing caps.
    CAUTION
    Do not turn the camshaft.

  20.
  21. Remove the bearing caps.
  22.
  23. Measure the plastigage at its widest point.
  24.
  25. Bearing oil clearance [Standard value] = 0.02 ~ 0.061mm (0.0008,en dash>0.0024in.)[Limit] = 0.1mm (0.0039in.)
  26.
  27. If the oil clearance is greater than maximum, replace the camshaft. If necessary, replace the bearing caps and cylinder head as a set.
  28.
  29. Completely remove the plastigage.
  30.
  31. Remove the camshafts.
  32.
  33. Inspect camshaft end play.
  34.
  35. Install the camshafts.
  36.
  37. Using a dial indicator, measure the end play while moving the camshaft back and forth.
  38.
  39. Camshaft end play [Standard value] = 0.1-0.2mm(0.004-0.008in.)
  40.
  41. If the end play is greater than maximum, replace the camshaft. If necessary, replace the bearing caps and cylinder head as a set.
