Oil Pan

Removal & Installation



  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Drain the engine oil and remove the engine undercovers.
  4.  
  5. Remove the steel (lower) oil pan bolts in the reverse sequence of the torque sequence.
  6.  
  7. Insert a seal cutter between the steel and aluminum oil pan.

  9. Tapping the cutter with a hammer, slide it around the entire edge of the oil pan. Be careful not to damage the aluminum mating surface of the upper oil pan.
  10.  
  11. Remove the steel oil pan and the oil strainer.
  12.  
  13. Remove the front exhaust pipe and its support.
  14.  
  15. Hang the engine at the right and left side engine slingers with a suitable hoist.
  16.  
  17. Position a suitable jack under the transaxle.
  18.  
  19. Remove the crankshaft position sensors (REFERENCE and POSITION) from the oil pan.
  20.  
  21. Remove the front and rear engine mounting nuts and bolts.
  22.  
  23. Remove the center crossmember assembly.
  24.  
  25. Remove the engine drive belts.
  26.  
  27. Remove the air conditioner compressor and the compressor mounting bracket.
  28.  
  29. Remove the rear cover plate and the lower transaxle bolts.
  30.  
  31. Remove the aluminum (upper) oil pan bolts in the reverse sequence of the torque sequence.

  33. Insert a seal cutter between the aluminum oil pan and the engine block.
  34.  
  35. Tapping the cutter with a hammer, slide it around the entire edge of the oil pan. Be careful not to damage the mating surfaces of the oil pan or engine block.
  36.  
  37. Remove the oil pan assembly.
  38.  
  39. Remove the bolts that secure the baffle plate and remove the baffle plate.
  40.  
  41. Remove the O-rings from the cylinder block and oil pump body.
  42.  

To install:

  1. Install the baffle plate to the oil pan and tighten the mounting bolts to 22-27 inch lbs. (2.5-3.1 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Apply sealant to the front and rear seal of the oil pan.
  4.  
  5. Install new O-rings to the cylinder block and the oil pump body.
  6.  
  7. Apply a 0.177-0.217 inch (4.5-5.5mm) continuous bead of liquid gasket to the upper oil pan mating surface and install the oil pan. Tighten the mounting bolts in sequence to 12-14 ft. lbs. (16-19 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the oil pan strainer and tighten the mounting bolts to 12-14 ft. lbs. (16-19 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Install the rear cover plate and the lower transaxle bolts.
  12.  
  13. Install the A/C compressor mounting bracket and compressor.
  14.  
  15. Install and adjust the engine drive belts.
  16.  
  17. Install the center crossmember assembly.
  18.  
  19. Install the front and rear engine mounting nuts and bolts.
  20.  
  21. Remove the support jack and the engine hoist.
  22.  
  23. Install the crankshaft position sensors (REFERENCE and POSITION) to the oil pan. Tighten the sensor mounting bolts to 75-96 inch lbs. (9-10 Nm).
  24.  
  25. Install the front exhaust pipe and its support.
  26.  
  27. Install the oil strainer.
  28.  
  29. Apply a 0.177-0.217 inch (4.5-5.5mm) continuous bead of liquid gasket to the lower oil pan mating surface and install the oil pan. Tighten the mounting bolts in sequence to 57-66 inch lbs. (6.4-7.5 Nm).
    NOTE
    Wait at least 30 minutes before refilling the engine oil.

  30.  
  31. Tighten the oil pan drain plug to 22-29 ft. lbs. (29-39 Nm).
  32.  
  33. Install the engine undercovers.
  34.  
  35. Refill the engine oil with the proper type and amount of fluid.
  36.  
  37. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  38.
