The front or rear wheel bearing assemblies on all models are pressed in and are not adjustable. If the bearing assembly does not turn smoothly or has more than 0.002 in. (0.05 mm) of axial play, replace the bearing assembly.

Removal & Installation

NOTE
Whenever the hub or bearing assembly is removed, the wheel bearing assembly must be replaced. Never reuse the old bearing assembly.

  1. Remove the knuckle assembly from the vehicle by separating the ball joint and tie rod end, then removing the retaining hardware securing the knuckle to the strut.
  2.  
  3. Using a shop press and a suitable tool, press the hub with the inner race from the steering knuckle.
  4.  
  5. Using a shop press and a suitable tool, press the bearing inner race from the hub and remove the outer grease seal.
  6.  
  7. Use snapring pliers to remove the snaprings from the steering knuckle.
  8.  
  9. Inspect the hub, steering knuckle and snaprings for cracks and/or wear; if necessary, replace the damaged part(s).
  10.  

To install:

  1. Install the inner snapring in the steering knuckle groove.
  2.  
  3. Using a shop press and a suitable tool, press the new wheel bearing assembly into the steering knuckle, until it seats, using a maximum pressure of 3 tons.
  4.  
  5. Install the outer snapring.
  6.  
  7. Pack the new grease seal lips with multi-purpose grease.
  8.  
  9. Using a shop press and a suitable tool, press the new outer grease seal into the steering knuckle.
  10.  
  11. Using a shop press and a suitable tool, press the new inner grease seal into the steering knuckle.
  12.  
  13. Using a shop press and a suitable tool, press the hub into the steering knuckle, until it seats, using a maximum pressure of 5.5 tons; be careful not to damage the grease seal.
  14.  
  15. To check the bearing operation, perform the following procedures:
    1. Increase the press pressure to 3.5-5.0 tons.
    2.  
    3. Spin the steering knuckle, several turns, in both directions.
    4.  
    5. Make sure the wheel bearings operate smoothly.
    6.

  17. If the wheel bearings do not operate smoothly, replace the wheel bearing assembly.
  18.  
  19. Install the knuckle assembly.
  20.  
  21. Install the halfshaft into the hub and tighten the locknut to 174-231 ft. lbs. (235-314 Nm).
  22.  
  23. Install the wheel assembly and lower the vehicle.
  24.  
  25. Road test the vehicle and verify proper operation.
