CV-Joint Boots



Replacement
Transaxle Side Joint

Specific to:

Infiniti I30 1996-1997

  1. Remove the halfshaft assembly from the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the boot bands and pull the boot back to expose the CV-joint components.
  4.  
  5. Before separating the joint assembly from the halfshaft, matchmark the slide joint housing and inner race.
  6.  
  7. Pry off the outer snapring and pull out the slide joint housing.
  8.  
  9. Place matchmarks on the inner race and the halfshaft.
  10.  
  11. Pry off the snapring, then remove the ball cage, the inner race, and the balls as a unit.
  12.  
  13. Remove the CV-joint boot.
    NOTE
    Cover the halfshaft serration with tape so not to damage the boot.

To install:

  1. Clean the joint of old grease and any debris which may be present.
  2.  
  3. Install the boot and a small boot band.
  4.  
  5. Install the ball cage, the inner race, and the balls as a unit. Be sure that the matchmarks on the inner race and halfshaft are aligned; install a new snapring.
  6.  
  7. Pack the CV-joint housing and boot with 5.87-6.17 oz. (165-175 g) of Nissan genuine grease or equivalent.
  8.  
  9. Install the slide joint housing and align the matchmarks made during disassembly.
  10.  
  11. Install a new outer snapring.
  12.  
  13. Install the boot and check the boot length, the boot length should be 3.82-3.90 inches (97-99 mm). The boot should not be deformed or swell at the specified length.
  14.  
  15. Secure the boot with the boot bands.
  16.  
  17. Install the halfshaft in the vehicle.
  18.  

Wheel Side Joint

Specific to:

Infiniti I30 1996-1997


NOTE
The joint on the wheel side cannot be disassembled.

  1. Remove the halfshaft from the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Matchmark the halfshaft and the joint assembly.
  4.  
  5. Separate the joint assembly from the halfshaft by placing the halfshaft securely in a vise and place the locknut on the end of the joint. Attach a slide hammer to the locknut and pull the joint from the halfshaft.
  6.  
  7. Remove the boot bands and remove the outer joint assembly and the boot.
  8.  

To install:

  1. Clean the joint of old grease and any debris which may be present.
    NOTE
    Cover halfshaft serration with tape so not to damage the boot.

  2.  
  3. Install the boot with new boot bands.
  4.  
  5. Align the matchmarks and lightly tap the joint assembly onto the shaft.
  6.  
  7. Pack CV-joint and boot with 6.70-7.05 oz. (190-200 g) of Moly grease or equivalent.
  8.  
  9. Install the boot and check the boot length, the boot length should be 3.78-3.86 inches (96-98 mm). The boot should not be deformed or swell at the specified length.
  10.  
  11. Secure the boot with the boot bands.
  12.  
  13. Install the halfshaft in the vehicle.
  14.
