Infiniti I30 1996-1997

The rear wheel bearing assemblies are pressed in and are not adjustable. If the bearing assembly does not turn smoothly or has more than 0.002 in. (0.05 mm) of axial play, replace the bearing assembly.

Removal & Installation

Infiniti I30 1996-1997


NOTE
If the vehicle is equipped with ABS, the sensor must be removed to protect the sensor and its wiring.

  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle. Remove the rear wheel(s).
  2.  
  3. Remove the wheel speed sensor.
  4.  
  5. Perform the following procedures:
    1. Remove the brake caliper and hang it by a piece of wire.
    2.  
    3. Remove the brake caliper support.
    4.  
    5. Remove the disc brake pads.
    6.  
    7. Remove the brake disc.
    8.

  7. Remove the grease cap.
  8.  
  9. Remove the cotter pin, wheel bearing locknut, washer, and the wheel hub bearing assembly. A slide hammer may be needed to remove the hub bearing assembly.
    NOTE
    The wheel hub bearing assembly is not repairable; it must be replaced when defective.

  10.  

To install:

  1. Install the wheel hub bearing assembly, the washer and the wheel bearing locknut. Torque the wheel bearing locknut to 137-188 ft. lbs. (186-255 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Verify that the wheel bearings operate smoothly.
  4.  
  5. Install a new cotter pin into the spindle to hold the wheel bearing locknut.
  6.  
  7. Install a dial micrometer to the rear wheel hub bearing assembly and check the axial end-play; it should be less than 0.0020 in. (0.05 mm).
  8.  
  9. Install the grease cap.
  10.  
  11. Install the ABS wheel sensor and its wiring.
  12.  
  13. Install the brake assembly and the wheels.
