Fig. Water pump and timing cover assembly-3.0L (VQ30DE) engine

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.
  3. Drain the coolant from the plugs on the radiator and both sides of the engine block.
  4.
  5. Position a jack under the oil pan for support. Be sure to place a block of wood on the jack for protection to the engine parts.
  6.
  7. Remove the right side engine mount and engine mounting bracket.
  8.
  9. Remove the drive belts and the idler pulley bracket.
  10.
  11. Remove the chain tensioner cover and the water pump cover.
  12.
  13. Push the timing chain tensioner sleeve and apply a stopper pin so it does not return.
  14.
  15. Remove the timing chain tensioner assembly.
  16.
  17. Remove the three bolts that secure the water pump.
  18.
  19. Rotate the crankshaft 20 degrees counterclockwise to provide timing chain slack.
  20.
  21. Put the two grade M8 bolts in the two M8 threaded holes of the water pump.
  22.
  23. Tighten each bolt by turning alternately 1 / 2 turn until they reach the timing chain rear case. Be sure to turn each bolt 1 / 2 turn at a time to prevent damage.
  24.
  25. Lift up the water pump and remove it.
  26.
  27. When removing the water pump, do not allow the water pump gear to hit the timing chain.
  28.
  29. Remove and discard the O-rings from the water pump.
  30.
  31. Clean all traces of liquid gasket from the water pump and covers.
  32.

To install:

  1. Using new O-rings, install the water pump to the engine block.
  2.
  3. Tighten the three water pump mounting bolts evenly to 62-86 inch lbs. (7-10 Nm).
  4.
  5. Rotate the crankshaft pulley to its original position by turning it 20 degrees clockwise.
  6.
  7. Install the timing chain tensioner and tighten the mounting bolts to 75-96 inch lbs. (9-10 Nm).
  8.
  9. Remove the stopper pin from the timing chain tensioner.
  10.
  11. Apply a continuous 0.091-0.130 inch (2.3-3.3mm) bead of liquid sealant to the mating surfaces of the timing chain tensioner and water pump covers.
  12.
  13. Install the timing chain tensioner and water pump covers to the engine block. Tighten the cover mounting bolts to 84-108 inch lbs. (10-13 Nm).
  14.
  15. Install the drive belts and the idler pulley bracket.
  16.
  17. Install the right side engine mounting bracket and the engine mount.
  18.
  19. Remove the jack from under the engine and install the drain plugs to the cylinder block.
  20.
  21. Connect the negative battery cable and refill the cooling system.
  22.
  23. Start the engine, bleed the cooling system, and check for leaks.
  24.
