Bleeding



Manual Bleeding

This procedure outlines how to bleed the hydraulic clutch with the transaxle in the vehicle. Only DOT 3 brake fluid should be added to the system.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the reservoir cap and fill the reservoir with new brake fluid.
  4.  
  5. Attach a transparent hose over the clutch bleeder screw nipple and submerge the opposite end of the hose in a container of brake fluid.
  6.  
  7. Depress the clutch pedal quickly to the fully depressed position.
  8.  
  9. Push the clip in order to move the clutch line into the bleed position.
  10.  
  11. Move the clutch line into normal position making sure the clip returns.
  12.  
  13. Lift the clutch pedal to the up position and hold for 5 seconds.
  14.  
  15. Bleed the system until no air bubbles are seen in the hose.
  16.  
  17. Check the clutch pedal for a spongy feel. If the pedal feels soft, repeat the bleeding procedure.

  19. Remove the bleeder tools and top off the fluid level if necessary.

Vacuum Bleeding

This procedure outlines how to bleed the hydraulic clutch with the transaxle in the vehicle. Only DOT 3 brake fluid should be added to the system.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Bleed the system as follows:
    1. Remove the reservoir cap and fill the reservoir with new brake fluid.
    2.  
    3. Install a metal Mityvac® too J 3555 Tool and adapter J43485.
    4.  
    5. Hold J 43485 in position and apply 15-20 hg (51-68 kPa) of vacuum.
    6.  
    7. Remove the adapter and refill the reservoir.
    8.  
    9. Depress the clutch pedal and cycle it for 30 seconds.
    10.  
    11. Lift the pedal up to the stop position and hold for 30 seconds.
    12.  
    13. Repeat steps A through F until all air is removed.
    14.  
    15. Place the transmission in Neutral.
    16.  
    17. Start the engine and pump the clutch pedal until firm.
    18.  
    19. Pump the brake pedal until firm.
    20.  
    21. Add any additional fluid if needed.
