Engine Control Module/Powertrain Control Module

Print

The 2.0L Engine uses a Powertrain Control Module (PCM), while the 2.2L and 2.4L engines use an Engine Control Module (ECM).

Operation

The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) performs many functions on your vehicle. The module accepts information from various sensors and computes the required fuel flow rate necessary to maintain the correct amount of air/fuel ratio throughout the entire engine operational range and controls the shifting of the transmission.

Based on the information that is received and programmed into the PCM's memory, the PCM generates output signals to control relays, actuators and solenoids. The module automatically senses and compensates for any changes in altitude when driving your vehicle.

Removal & Installation

2.0L Engine
  1. Using a scan tool, retrieve the percentage of remaining engine oil. Record the remaining engine oil life.
  2.
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.
  5. Disconnect the 3 powertrain control module (PCM) harness connectors from the PCM, noting proper orientation.
    NOTE
Control module damage may result when the metal case contacts battery voltage. DO NOT contact the control module metal case with battery voltage when servicing a control module, using battery booster cables or when charging the vehicles battery.

  6.
  7. Use the retaining tab to release the PCM from the underhood junction block bracket.
  8.

To install:

NOTE
Control module damage may result when the metal case contacts battery voltage. DO NOT contact the control module metal case with battery voltage when servicing a control module, using battery booster cables or when charging the vehicles battery.

  1. Use the retaining tab to secure the PCM, when installing the PCM to the underhood junction block bracket.
  2.
  3. Connect the PCM harness connectors to the PCM.
  4.
  5. Connect the negative battery cable.
  6.
  7. Program the PCM.
  8.

2.2L Engine
  1. Using a scan tool, retrieve the percentage of remaining engine oil. Record the remaining engine oil life.
  2.
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.
  5. Remove the engine control module cover.
  6.
  7. Disconnect the body wiring harness electrical connector from the ECM.
  8.
  9. Disconnect the engine wiring harness electrical connector from the ECM.
    NOTE
Control module damage may result when the metal case contacts battery voltage. DO NOT contact the control module metal case with battery voltage when servicing a control module, using battery booster cables or when charging the vehicles battery.

  10.
  11. Release the retaining tab in order to release the ECM from the underhood junction block bracket.
  12.
