Accelerator Pedal Position Sensor

Print

Operation

The sensor is made up of the two individual sensors within a single housing. Each sensor has a unique functionality to determine pedal position. The APP system along with the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) is used to calculate and control the amount of acceleration and deceleration through fuel injector control.

Removal & Installation

  1. Disconnect the Connector Position Assurance (CPA) from the Accelerator Pedal Position (APP) sensor connector.
  2.
  3. Disconnect the APP sensor harness connector.
  4.
  5. Remove the APP assembly attachment bolts from the brake pedal assembly.
  6.
  7. Remove the APP assembly from the vehicle
  8.

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of removal.
  2.

Testing

  1. Check the condition of the connector. Make sure the connector is firmly attached. Check for broken or bent connector pins. Repair any connector damage before continuing with troubleshooting the issue.
  2.
  3. Check the condition of the wiring to the connector. If the wiring is damaged, repair the wiring before continuing with any further tests.
  4.
  5. Turn OFF the ignition.
  6.
  7. Disconnect the accelerator pedal connector.
  8.
  9. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  10.
  11. Measure the voltage of the APP sensor 2 5-volt reference circuit to a good ground. The reading should be 4.8-5.2 volts. If not check the wiring for an open, short or high resistance.
  12.
  13. Turn OFF the ignition.
  14.
  15. Disconnect the accelerator pedal connector
  16.
  17. Make sure that the pedal is at the rest position.
  18.
  19. Measure the resistance from the 5-volt reference of the accelerator pedal assembly to the accelerator pedal position (APP) sensor 2 signal of the accelerator pedal assembly. If the resistance is less than 450 ohms, replace the sensor.
