Possible Causes:



Base engine problem (check the valve train for cause of noise)
 
Check the type of fuel being used (i.e., low octane fuel in a high altitude area with the driven under high-load conditions)
 
Engine mechanical problem creating too much engine noise (check the belt tensioner, check for any loose brackets)

Possible Causes:



Knock sensor signal circuit is open, shorted to ground or power
 
Knock sensor ground circuit is open (check for proper torque)

Check for "arcing" conditions at the coils or spark plug boots

Check for carbon tracking on the spark plug insulators
 
CMP sensor signal circuit is open or shorted (intermittent fault)
 
CMP sensor is damaged or it has failed (an intermittent fault)

Air leaks at the exhaust manifold or in the exhaust pipes
 
Base engine problems (i.e., high engine oil or coolant usage)

Continuous engine misfire conditions, or weak or low coil output
 
Front HO2S or rear HO2S is contaminated with fuel or moisture
 
Rear HO2S is loose in the mounting hole (check it for a leak)
